Methodology – How We Determined The Worst Cities For Women In Virginia

Each city was ranked based on four key criteria:

• Percentage of Women in Management (Lower percentage indicates worse conditions)
• Percentage of Women Living in Poverty (Higher percentage indicates worse conditions)
• Women’s Earnings as a Percentage of Men’s Earnings (Lower percentage indicates worse conditions)
• Percentage of Uninsured Women (Lower percentage indicates worse conditions)

To evaluate the income gap between men and women in various cities, we utilized data from the Census’ American Community Survey. By dividing the median income of male workers by the median income of female workers, we were able to calculate how much women earn for every dollar earned by men.

For the poverty statistics, we relied on the ACS data as well. The poverty rate is primarily based on household income, which includes contributions from spouses and other family members. To provide a clearer focus on women’s financial situations, we specifically looked at women living alone. This demographic tends to be younger and earn less, resulting in a poverty rate that may be higher than the overall average and does not account for married women.

The percentage of women in management roles was also extracted from the ACS to gauge the representation of women in leadership positions. Given that women are often advocates for other women, this metric is essential in understanding both individual successes and the opportunities available for advancement.

Finally, we consulted the ACS once again for data on the percentage of uninsured women in each city.

Only cities in Virginia with populations exceeding 5,000 were included in this analysis.
