Conducts animal behavior training and operant conditioning of animals; attends training classes as required by the Enrichment and Training Coordinator.
Cleans, disinfects and maintains animal exhibits, enclosures, food and water dishes, pools and other areas. Performs routine maintenance and upkeep of assigned work areas ensuring that all fence lines are free of weeds and service areas are mowed.
Must deliver exceptional customer service by engaging with guests on a regular basis to create a friendly, memorable and positive experience; give educational and conservation oriented keeper talks to the public.
Must have knowledge of behavioral characteristics and handling procedures for assigned animals.
Must have very good oral and written communication skills.
Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
Must be able to use tools and operate small equipment.
May be able to cross train in other areas as required.
May have to lift up to 50 lbs.
Experience Required
High school diploma or GED. Three years of experience in animal husbandry at a zoological park are required. Must possess a Driver license. Must be able to work days, nights, holidays, and weekends on a varied work schedule.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The First Mate serves as second-in-command aboard the Research Vessel Coral Reef II and must be capable of assuming full command in the absence of the captain. Zoo Miami Zoo Miami Keeper 2 (Atlantic Team) Provides overall care and maintenance of assigned work areas ensuring animal health and safety, staff safety and public safety through established standard operating procedures for animal care and exhibition as set forth by AZA, USDA and Zoo Miami.
Observes animals, inspects exhibit and off exhibit enclosures; prepares daily zoo keeper reports, and notes on any changes in behavior, diet, sickness, reproductive status, body condition.
Feeds animals in accordance with nutritional and behavioral requirements as specified by curatorial staff; administers medications; participates in capturing, crating and transporting animals; participates in approved scientific research and educational projects.
Conducts animal behavior training and operant conditioning of animals; attends training classes as required by the Enrichment and Training Coordinator.
Cleans, disinfects and maintains animal exhibits, enclosures, food and water dishes, pools and other areas. Performs routine maintenance and upkeep of assigned work areas ensuring that all fence lines are free of weeds and service areas are mowed.
Must deliver exceptional customer service by engaging with guests on a regular basis to create a friendly, memorable and positive experience; give educational and conservation oriented keeper talks to the public.
Must have knowledge of behavioral characteristics and handling procedures for assigned animals.
Must have very good oral and written communication skills.
Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
Must be able to use tools and operate small equipment.
May be able to cross train in other areas as required.
May have to lift up to 50 lbs.
Experience Required
High school diploma or GED. Three years of experience in animal husbandry at a zoological park are required. Must possess a Driver license. Must be able to work days, nights, holidays, and weekends on a varied work schedule.

Zoo Miami Zoo Commissary Keeper This position reports directly to the Animal Nutrition Supervisor who provides direction on animal food preparation, commissary operations and food safety; and reviews work for satisfactory completion of assignments. This team prepares approximately 500 animal diets each day and is responsible for ordering, receiving and properly storing food items, sanitation of the nutrition center, diet preparation and delivery of food for animals at Zoo Miami and assists with ensuring a high level of nutrition for all animals under Zoo Miami care.
Responsibilities/duties include, but are not limited to:
Prepares animal diets includes counting, measuring, cutting, or weighing individual diet items including but not limited to meat, produce, whole prey, fish, bones, dry feeds, browse, live insects, hay and canned items.
Uses kitchen equipment such as choppers, grinders, mixers, and saws safely and properly.
Ensures highest level of food safety through quality control, proper rotation and storage, proper food handling, and appropriate use of chemicals and washing.
Maintains the cleaning and hygiene of food/prep stations, dishes, tools and equipment, food storage areas, floors, hay barn and all aspects of the Animal Nutrition Center.
Utilizes systems for recycling and composting food and non-food waste.
Checks in items from outside vendors including paperwork, rotation, and food quality control.
Assists in the maintenance of Nutrition computer records including food item data, inventories, vendor information, animal diet records and standard operating procedures.
Organizes food storage area and daily diets to ensure accurate delivery of food items.
Delivers food items to specific animal areas.
Inventories and orders food items.
Provides tours of the Animal Nutrition Center
Assists in the training of new Zoo Miami Nutrition Keepers, volunteers and students
Performs other related tasks as required.
Experience Required
Two years of experience in food/diet preparation in a professional setting.
