Asia Society company history timeline

1956

Sharing the vision of John D. Rockefeller 3rd, who founded Asia Society in New York in 1956, they recognized the need to educate Americans about Asia and to forge closer ties between Houston and the peoples and institutions of Asia.

The Asia Society was established in 1956 to increase American understanding of Asia and improve Asian-American cultural relations.

The Fund’s long-term support for the Society began in 1956, its inaugural year.

1979

Forward-thinking Houstonians led by former First Lady Barbara Bush and former Ambassador Roy M. Huffington established Asia Society Texas Center in 1979.

1995

In 1995 the Texas Center’s Board of Directors voted to build a home for its programs and activities.

2000

New-York Historical Society, Purchase, Watson Fund, 2000.6ab

2012

Forward-thinking Houstonians led by former First Lady Barbara Bush and former Ambassador Roy M. Huffington established Asia Society Texas Center in 1979. It opened to the public April 14, 2012.

2016

In 2016, Asia Society celebrated its 60th anniversary with a series of programs and exhibitions looking back on its first six decades.

2020

New-York Historical Society, Purchased through the generosity of Susan and Robert Klein, 2020.33
