Austin College company history timeline

1850

The College opened in Huntsville and admitted its first class in the fall of 1850.

1876

The college was moved to Sherman in 1876.

1887

After MacGregor's death in 1887, the college welcomed President Luckett back to the campus.

1919

In 1919, former President William Howard Taft spoke there on the League of Nations.

1942

Throughout 1942, Austin College trained some 300 men and women in engineering, science and management courses as part of the United States Office of Education's war efforts.

1972

In 1972, the College adopted the comprehensive educational program that continues to shape much of the academic life and curriculum of the College.

1973

On September 20, 1973, the musician Jim Croce died in a plane crash in Natchitoches, Louisiana, on his way to perform the next night at Austin College.

1994

In 1994, Doctor Oscar Page joined the community as its 14th president.

1999

The College celebrated its Sesquicentennial in 1999, highlighting 150 years of quality education and a history of learning, leadership, and lasting values.

2009

Doctor Marjorie Hass joined the campus in 2009 as both its first female and Jewish faith president.

2017

The Board of Trustees named Steven P. O’Day, J.D., as the 16th president of Austin College, and he officially began his leadership role on October 30, 2017.
