In addition to maintenance duties, these intern positions would assist with monitoring biophysical and social resource conditions within the BWCAW. This is an arduous position that involves lifting and portaging 50+ pound tool packs, overnight gear, and canoes. Participants will be required to camp overnight for up to 8 days/7 nights. The main mode of travel is with canoes, but motorboats may occasionally be used as well. Major duties include backcountry maintenance using traditional (non-mechanized) tools including crosscut saws, shovels, pulaskis, and axes, as part of the standard toolkit. Internships begin with a 2-day base camp orientation and introduction to the intern crew. This is followed by an 8-day wilderness expedition training, where you will see how VOBS runs our programs from the student perspective. After completion of the wilderness portion of training, interns will return to base for another 7+ days of training in a variety of areas, including driver training, student management skills, technical skills, further orientation into how VOBS operates, and other training as needed. Interns arrive in May or June and stay through August. Following the initial training phase, interns will perform a wide variety of duties on any given day or week ranging from supporting a rock-climbing day for students, driving to the airport to greet a new student group, packing food/gear for courses, supporting students on our ropes course, dropping groups off to start their expedition, or assisting with facilities maintenance on our 40-acre wilderness basecamp. What Will You Do? * Under direct supervision, the main responsibility of this internship opportunity is to develop risk control and general insurance industry knowledge, and to assist in providing risk control support to home office leadership, commercial or construction field consultants, or staff within our specialist disciplines (property, casualty services, forensics / industrial hygiene lab). This 10-12 week paid position. * Internship responsibilities and activities involve working within a team environment and may focus on any of the following: * As an active member of the team, assisting in: * preparing, conducting, and completing risk evaluations of client locations * determining the potential hazards and risk factors to be considered in risk selection * identifying uncontrolled hazards and making appropriate recommendations * consulting with clients on ways to control hazards to help them reduce, mitigate, or prevent loss * Researching and apply technical information to support current risk control service efforts * Attending co-surveys with experienced Risk Control staff to learn and develop consulting skills * Collaborating with Underwriting, Claim, Clients, BI Business Partners and other Risk Control staff * Completing one Capstone project and presentation to senior management on a relevant Risk Control topic * Ensuring timely completion of assignments * Perform other duties as assigned. Job Summary: The Overnight Camp Counselor is responsible for planning, leading, coordinating, and implementing core and non-core programs and experiences for children in a small group setting in daily program and in the overnight cabin setting.
