CLAYTON HEALTH SYSTEMS INC history

2003 – The Burlington Industries plant across the street from the hospital is renovated into the Johnston Medical Mall with HealthQuest Wellness Center as the anchor.

2008 – The Hospital Authority issues $144 million in government-insured mortgage revenue bonds to undertake its largest ever capital expansion: a new patient wing in Smithfield and an outpatient center and freestanding emergency department in Clayton.

On September 30, 2009, the Union County General Hospital celebrated the inauguration of its 22,100-square-foot new extension.

2010 – Johnston Medical Center-Smithfield opens a five-story wing with modern rooms, bringing the total to 199 beds.

January 2012 – Wakefield Grammar School Foundation (WGSF) first advised that the NHS were planning to sell the site in the next couple of years.

2013 – After a year and a half of study and deliberation, the Johnston Health Board of Commissioners chooses UNC Health Care as a strategic partner.

2014 – Johnston Health and UNC Health Care complete their joint venture agreement.

December 2015 – agreement finally reached between NHS and WGSF for sale of Clayton Hospital site to WGSF (subject to planning).

During 2016 – preparation made to submit planning application including detailed discussions with Historic England and the conservation team.

June 2017 – planning application made to Wakefield Council to clear most of the buildings but retaining the tower and immediate buildings either side.
