POSITION SNAPSHOT: The Fontana Police Dispatcher is a non-uniformed position. A typical shift is 12-hours which predominantly takes place within the Dispatch Center of the Police Department. You will be a member of a productive team that operates in a fast-paced environment while answering calls from the public and communicating with department personnel in the field via phone, computer, or radio. This communication includes but is not limited to: call taking, working secondary and primary radio channels, collecting and/or passing information to partner jurisdictions, and accurate data-entry. Under the administration of the Chief of Police, the University Police Department is responsible for the safety, health, and well-being of the University community. The Communications Unit is a primary Public Safely answering point. Provides essential communications between campus law enforcement headquarters, campus police, community service officers, and parking officers in the field, outside emergency and law enforcement agencies and the public. Screens all 9-1-1, blue emergency phones and business lines to determine the appropriate level of service needed in emergency and non-emergency situations and allocates appropriate personnel and resources to incidents. Enters calls for service into a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) computer system, accesses campus information, and queries local, state, and national law enforcement databases. Monitors the campus alarm systems, contacts appropriate parties, initiates police and/or fire response and set off the evacuation of a building or the entire campus if necessary. Required to multi-task and must do several things at one time, quickly and efficiently. Communicates via radio to units in the field while also answering the phone. Also ensures the interview room is successfully recorded and activity logged when a subject is being held inside. Works independently, reacts quickly, and demonstrates good judgment and discretion in stressful situations. Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
High school diploma or the equivalent. One year of verifiable experience using a switchboard and two-way radio communication system in a law enforcement or comparable agency setting within the last ten years. Completion of, or the ability to attend and successfully complete, the Police Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) dispatcher course. Ability to pass supplemental POST requirements for dispatchers such as a background check, physical requirements, and other related requirements. Ability to effectively use the phonetic alphabet, speak clearly and concisely, follow oral and written instructions, transfer information accurately, and handle a wide range of interpersonal interactions effectively. Ability to learn to use applicable automated dispatch and law enforcement systems and databases.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Under the administration of the Chief of Police, the University Police Department is responsible for the safety, health, and well-being of the University community. The Communications Unit is a primary Public Safely answering point. Provides essential communications between campus law enforcement headquarters, campus police, community service officers, and parking officers in the field, outside emergency and law enforcement agencies and the public. Screens all 9-1-1, blue emergency phones and business lines to determine the appropriate level of service needed in emergency and non-emergency situations and allocates appropriate personnel and resources to incidents. Enters calls for service into a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) computer system, accesses campus information, and queries local, state, and national law enforcement databases. Monitors the campus alarm systems, contacts appropriate parties, initiates police and/or fire response and set off the evacuation of a building or the entire campus if necessary. Required to multi-task and must do several things at one time, quickly and efficiently. Communicates via radio to units in the field while also answering the phone. Also ensures the interview room is successfully recorded and activity logged when a subject is being held inside. Works independently, reacts quickly, and demonstrates good judgment and discretion in stressful situations. Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
High school diploma or the equivalent. One year of verifiable experience using a switchboard and two-way radio communication system in a law enforcement or comparable agency setting within the last ten years. Completion of, or the ability to attend and successfully complete, the Police Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) dispatcher course. Ability to pass supplemental POST requirements for dispatchers such as a background check, physical requirements, and other related requirements. Ability to effectively use the phonetic alphabet, speak clearly and concisely, follow oral and written instructions, transfer information accurately, and handle a wide range of interpersonal interactions effectively. Ability to learn to use applicable automated dispatch and law enforcement systems and databases.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Under the administration of the Chief of Police, the University Police Department is responsible for the safety, health, and well-being of the University community. The Communications Unit is a primary Public Safely answering point. Provides essential communications between campus law enforcement headquarters, campus police, community service officers, and parking officers in the field, outside emergency and law enforcement agencies and the public. Screens all 9-1-1, blue emergency phones and business lines to determine the appropriate level of service needed in emergency and non-emergency situations and allocates appropriate personnel and resources to incidents. Enters calls for service into a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) computer system, accesses campus information, and queries local, state, and national law enforcement databases. Monitors the campus alarm systems, contacts appropriate parties, initiates police and/or fire response and set off the evacuation of a building or the entire campus if necessary. Required to multi-task and must do several things at one time, quickly and efficiently. Communicates via radio to units in the field while also answering the phone. Essential Qualifications
High school diploma or the equivalent. One year of verifiable experience using a switchboard and two-way radio communication system in a law enforcement or comparable agency setting within the last ten years. Completion of, or the ability to attend and successfully complete, the Police Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) dispatcher course. Ability to pass supplemental POST requirements for dispatchers such as a background check, physical requirements, and other related requirements. Ability to effectively use the phonetic alphabet, speak clearly and concisely, follow oral and written instructions, transfer information accurately, and handle a wide range of interpersonal interactions effectively. Ability to learn to use applicable automated dispatch and law enforcement systems and databases.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. * Communicates with police units in the field by radio;

Provides front counter assistance to the public by addressing inquiries related to overnight parking permits and clearance letter requests, while accurately handling credit card and cash transactions:
* Provides information at the counter and on the telephone about vehicle codes, penal code, fire safety, basic law, first aid, and city rules and regulations;
* Maintains a daily log of police activity;
* Logs and serves subpoenas for in-house officers;
* Processes inquiries from officers in the field through Justice Data Interface Controller (JDIC) computer;
* Inputs data into the computer about stolen or damaged property, stolen vehicles, registered guns, and crime reports;
* Receives complaints and reports, and provides the public with information and directions;
* Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
* Police department policies and applicable laws governing public safety dispatching, including the California Penal Code, Health and Safety Code, Motor Vehicle Code, Welfare and Institutions Code, Business and Professions Code, Police Department Operations Orders, Sierra Madre Municipal Code, and general Emergency Operations Center procedures.
* Skilled in operating, computer, and telephone communications systems, including Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) command codes and typewriter keyboards.
Ability to:
* Speak with a clear, well-modulated voice in English by phone and on radio dispatch equipment while tactfully communicating with highly emotional callers.

This position is open to Police Dispatcher-Recruit candidates who have not yet completed a P.O.S.T. Public Safety Dispatchers' Basic Course and who do not have prior public safety dispatch experience, provided they demonstrate a willingness and ability to learn. A valid American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools and the Community certification is required at the time of hire or must be obtained within three (3) months of employment.

The Chino Police Department is seeking highly motivated individuals to apply for the position of Public Safety Dispatcher II. To qualify for this position, applicants must have one (1) year of current full-time experience operating a public safety Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, or have been employed as a full-time, non-probationary Public Safety Dispatcher with eligibility for re-hire within the last year (from date of application).
The Police Department's Communications Center is comprised of 17 Public Safety Dispatchers and three (3) Public Safety Dispatch Supervisors. The center is a new state of the art facility which offers standing and sitting workstations with personal comfort systems at each console. There is also an onsite gym available for a small fee payable to the Police Officer's Association.
Typing Requirement: This position requires a minimum typing speed of 40 net words per minute with fewer than 10 errors. All qualified applicants who are invited to interview will be required to bring a valid typing certificate on the day of their interview. The typing certificate must be from an accredited school or agency and dated within the past 12 months. This also applies to internal applicants not currently working in a job classification that requires typing at 40 net words per minute. Definition:
Under general supervision, receives emergency and non-emergency calls; dispatches Police and emergency units; maintains contact with personnel in the field; operates a variety of transmitting/receiving equipment; performs a variety of general support duties related to dispatch activities; and does related work as assigned.
Duties/Responsibilities
Public Safety Dispatcher II's are required to be able to dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls to either Police or emergency services personnel out in the field. Promotion to this level is not automatic and requires an evaluation by management of an incumbent's skill and performance levels. This is a civilian position.
Essential Functions:
* Receive requests for Police and emergency services over the phone; answer 911 calls; screen incoming calls to determine necessity, priority, and type of response required; monitor other radio frequencies to be aware of incidents elsewhere that may affect operations.
* Dispatch, as necessary, Police and other emergency units in response to calls for service or requests from Officers in the field; use appropriate terminology and cite Code sections by number; call public and private agencies, such as allied law enforcement, hospitals, towing services and utilities, and request mutual assistance when necessary.
* Keep track of Police unit locations and status; maintain constant radio communication with personnel in the field; run warrant checks on subjects, registration checks on vehicles, and property checks; relay information and instructions to personnel in the field.
* Maintain accurate log of incoming service requests and actions taken; prepare other reports and records as directed; maintain files necessary for dispatch as assigned; enter, update, and retrieve information from the computer and teletype networks.
* Operate a variety of public safety telecommunications equipment; test and inspect equipment as needed.
* Train, supervise, and advise Public Safety Dispatch personnel when providing temporary relief for Public Safety Dispatch Supervisor as assigned.
* Provide temporary and vacation relief for other staff as necessary.
* Work mandatory overtime as assigned.
* Provide general information to the public; as necessary, refer callers to appropriate agencies; calm callers; maintain professionalism in radio transmissions during hectic, tense, and dangerous situations.
* Interact with various federal, state, and local databases to support filed units with investigations.
* Monitor and operate a variety of sensors such as CCTV cameras and Licensed Plate Readers to provide real time information to field units.
* Interact with co-workers at all levels in the organization in a collaborative and customer service-oriented manner.
