You will oversee the coordination of pickup requests, dispatch local truck drivers, and ensure accurate and timely communication with warehouses, carriers, and internal teams. This position requires strong multitasking ability, attention to detail, and the capacity to operate confidently in fast-paced, real-time environments.
Key Responsibilities & Operational Control
1. Pickup Planning & Route Assignment
Pickup Scheduling: Review daily pickup requests from warehouse teams, vendors, and system-generated orders, converting them into clear and executable driver assignments.
Route Consolidation: Combine same-area or same-facility pickups to reduce empty miles and increase driver efficiency.
System Execution: Use scheduling tools, spreadsheets, and Dispatch Management Systems (DMS) to assign drivers and update real-time status.
Real-Time Adjustments: Make urgent schedule or truck allocation changes based on volume spikes, warehouse delays, or driver availability.
2. Dispatching Drivers & Communication
Primary Driver Contact: Act as the main communication bridge with all first-mile drivers, providing instructions, pickup details, updated ETAs, and resolving on-road issues.
Performance Tracking: Monitor driver progress through tracking tools and maintain constant visibility of all active pickups.
Status Updates: Ensure every pickup status is clearly recorded-picked up, failed, completed, or needed exception support.
Support & Troubleshooting: Immediately address challenges such as truck capacity issues, access problems, delays, or miscommunication from warehouse side.
3. Cross-Functional Coordination
Warehouse Coordination: Communicate directly with warehouse teams to confirm pickup readiness, pallet counts, and required equipment.
Carrier & Line-Haul Sync: Work closely with the line-haul team to ensure picked-up freight is properly transferred to outbound trucks without delay.
Exception Management: Collaborate with QA/QC or Operations teams to resolve discrepancies such as missing pallets, incorrect manifests, or late pickups.
Documentation Accuracy: Ensure all paperwork, BOLs, manifests, and pickup confirmations are correctly captured and uploaded.
4. Operational Floor Presence
Maintain visibility on the warehouse dispatch floor when necessary, interacting with warehouse staff, verifying outgoing freight, and ensuring drivers receive accurate pickup instructions.
Able to stand or walk for extended periods when the operation requires on-site monitoring.
Essential Requirements
Bilingual Required: Must speak, read, and write Chinese and English fluently (Chinese proficiency required to communicate with local truck drivers and warehouse partners).
Computer Skills: Comfortable using spreadsheets, dispatch systems, GPS/driver tracking tools, and able to learn new systems quickly.
Logistics Knowledge: Understanding of warehouse processes, bill of lading (BOL), manifests, pallet counts, and first-mile/line-haul basics.
Strong Communication: Clear, concise, and confident communication with drivers and warehouse staff in fast-changing environments.
Decision-Making: Ability to make quick and sound decisions during urgent scheduling conflicts or unexpected exceptions.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Public Safety Dispatcher I: This is the trainee-level classification in the Dispatcher series. Trainees work in the communications center and receive on the job training, specific day-to-day direction and are closely supervised. Incumbents at this level are not expected to function with the same amount of knowledge or skills as positions allocated to the II and Senior levels of the series. Initially under immediate supervision, incumbents learn and perform routine duties in support of public safety communications. Duties include frequent interaction with the public via telephone in both emergency and non-emergency situations. The position requires incumbents to receive, relay and provide accurate information, forms and reports to others within established legal guidelines. Once a Public Safety Dispatcher I completes training, and as incumbent demonstrates skill to perform the work independently, general supervision and frequent review of work lessen. Positions at this level develop the skills to perform most of the duties required of positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Public Safety Dispatcher II: This is the journey level classification in the Public Safety Dispatcher Series. Positions at this level have completed training and are fully competent to perform the full range of assigned duties. Employees answer 9-1-1, public, allied agency telephone lines as well as making outgoing calls to service providers, allied agencies and citizens. PSD's must document information in a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System accurately, quickly and take the appropriate action on each call. Benefits
The Sacramento Communications Center dispatch employees receive an additional $300.00 recruitment and retention monthly pay differential. Part-time and intermittent employees shall receive a pro rata share of the monthly differential based on the total number of hours worked within the monthly pay period.

We encourage highly qualified applicants to consider supporting our newly formed 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center. Under direction and management of the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District, the 9-1-1 Center provides the full array of public safety communication services for Police/Fire and EMS.
THEPOSITION
Under the supervision of a shift supervisor, the Public Safety Dispatcher processes emergency and non-emergency calls for service; dispatches police, fire, medical, and other emergency equipment, by telephone or radio, utilizing complex technical aids, such as Computer Aided Dispatch systems (CAD); and performs other related duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will possess a POST Basic Certificate, EMD Certificate, and knowledge in all disciplines of Police/Fire and EMS dispatching and one year as a Public Safety Dispatcher with a demonstrated background in the operation of modern Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems. Note: The POST Basic Certificate is required at time of application. Without the POST Basic Certificate at time of application the candidate will not be considered.
Work Schedule: Public Safety Dispatchers work a 48x96 schedule.
Compensation:Base Salary includes holiday, EMD, and FLSA pay. To qualify for holiday pay, you must be on a 56-hour schedule and to qualify for EMD pay, you must have passed the EMD course.
DUTIES
Receives and processes 9-1-1, emergency and non-emergency requests for assistance, evaluates the information provided and creates CAD system events; provides pre-arrival and post-dispatch instructions to the caller or relays information to other jurisdictions; processes and prioritizes incoming calls.
Dispatches Police/Fire and EMS personnel and equipment on both routine and emergency calls utilizing a CAD system, multiple video display terminals, radio dispatching consoles, and related equipment.
Monitors and maintains status of public safety personnel and equipment; analyzes situations accurately and takes effective action to help ensure officer and firefighter safety; handle the reassignment of fire equipment to ensure adequate district-wide fire protection.
Provides operational support for police, fire, and medical operations; facilitates outside agency assistance and mutual aid requests; as requested, enters, updates, and retrieves information from teletype networks relating to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, stolen vehicles; handles tow requests and other information.

The San Ramon Valley 911 Communications Center is equipped with the latest advances in emergency telecommunications technology, and is a Primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for the City of San Ramon and a secondary PSAP to the Town of Danville and unincorporated Alamo. Dispatchers process all incoming emergency and non-emergency calls for service and dispatch Police/Fire and EMS. The San Ramon Valley 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center is an EMD Accredited Center of Excellence, certified by the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch. The San Bruno Police Department has a long-standing tradition of small-town service with big-city dedication to public safety. Public Safety Dispatchers are responsible for public safety dispatch and related records management activities. This is a per-diem position. Shifts are offered based on staffing needs, and per-diem employees may choose the open shifts that are available. Part-time temporary employees serve in an at-will capacity and understand that service with the City may be terminated at any time. This position does not provide any benefits, with the exception of paid sick leave.
