Answers incoming emergency and non-emergency voice and Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD) calls: determines nature of call and correct signal and/or code; simultaneously enters information into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System; and advises supervisors of all priority calls.
Provides lifesaving and pre-arrival instructions to callers in emergency medical situations: remains available to callers while units are in route; and checks medical status.
Forwards information to the appropriate emergency response units or agencies: processes requests from officers and/or deputies through the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and assist the public with request
Utilizes computer to enter and retrieve data: sorts and files records; and assists callers with transactions and information relating to police, fire, and Emergency Medical Services activity.
Identifies incorrect or outdated information contained in the CAD: and completes update form for changes of street names and/or addresses, and submits to supervision for verification.
Testifies in Court: may be called to testify as the owner of a voice on and E-911 recording and/or to be a witness that a call was received.
Dispatches the appropriate agency personnel to scene through use of radio and CAD System: coordinates multi-unit and multi-jurisdictional response calls; maintains awareness of available response units; dispatches calls to available units; maintains contact with response units to provide information and instructions regarding emergencies; and assists in the coordination of correct response.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of work experience that shows the ability to maintain steady employment in any field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. The Communications Center provides primary telecommunications and logistical support for daily and emergency operations, law enforcement information gathering and dissemination, wildfire response and maintenance operations; is the 9-1-1 public emergency answering point; and serves as a primary contact for other federal and state agencies. The Center provides full services 24 hours per day, seven days per week, and 365 days per year.
This position is located in the Emergency Communications Center (ECC) within the Division Visitor and Resource Protection, Headquarters, Blue Ridge Parkway (BLRI) and answers directly to the Communications Center Manager. The ECC provides dispatch services for all public safety functions as well as primary telecommunications and logistical support for the Park's day-to-day and emergency operations (law enforcement, fire, EMS, search and rescue and maintenance). The ECC maintains on-site access (query and input) to NCIC/NLETS/DCI Law Enforcement Telecommunications systems.
The incumbent operates computerized dispatch consoles and related equipment in the course of serving as the primary point of contact for law enforcement, emergency medical, fire and search and rescue incidents. The employee must be proficient in the use of CAD, law enforcement records management systems like IMARS or Mark 43, and a number of state and national public safety computer networks.
The incumbent routinely communicates and relays information with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies around the country to acquire or share law enforcement information. Relays and disseminates information for law enforcement officers, all park division staff, residents, visitors and business contacts.

Physical Demands: Incumbent must function efficiently in a confined space for extended periods with no breaks and no opportunity to leave the confines of the Communications Center. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a computer, copier, telephone, recorder, and radio/communications equipment. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: walking, standing, bending, stooping, fingering, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, and hearing. Requires sitting for extended periods of time. Must be able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary work.
DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, methods and procedures. Requires the ability to prepare letters, reports, forms, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques; to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation; and to make independent judgment in the absence of management.
VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of administrative, technical or professional languages including law enforcement, emergency medical, radio codes and police communications terminology.
NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages.
FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with a variety of machinery and equipment including a computer, copier, telephone, recorder, and radio-communications equipment.
MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands, fingers, and eyes accurately in using office and radio/communications equipment. Requires the ability to use the keyboard, lift, bend, push, and pull objects or materials using body parts as the position necessitates.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as automated office equipment, radio/communications equipment, and office/computer supplies. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR DISCRIMINATION: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency.
PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone, two-way radio, etc.

* BLS Certification required within 30 days of hire.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
* The Public Safety Dispatcher displays analytical and organizational skills necessary to receive, evaluate, and dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance.
* Utilizes effective communication through verbal and typing skills to maintain efficient operations and respond to police and security situations.
* Exhibits technological competency to utilize complex telecommunications, alarms, and computer systems.
* Answer, evaluate, prioritize, and dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance to Police and Public Safety Officers.
* Monitor and process calls from large number of incoming telephone lines, intercom lines, emergency call boxes and alarms.
* Monitor complex system of alarms, computerized access control, and CCTV.
* Must remain calm and focused during life and death incidents to ensure Police, Security, and Medical response is appropriate and complete.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
* Two (2) years of customer service/telecommunications, military, law enforcement or security experience required.
* A high school diploma or equivalent.
* Additional training beyond high school preferred.
* APCO, IAHSS or related certification desired.
