Essential Functions Safely operates solid waste collection truck throughout campus areas and off campus if required. Safely operates other vehicles and motorized equipment as required in the performance of assigned duties. Loads bagged trash and solid waste from assigned pick-up points into truck and unloads at designated transfer station. Collects waste from outside containers. Performs preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment, to include checking level of and adding fuel, water, grease, oil and air, checking brakes and brake fluid level, changing tires, cleaning interior and washing exterior. Safely operates a loader, backhoe, bull dozer, lull lift, skid steer, and excavator in digging ditches, building berms and swales. Loads sand, soil, gravel, and rock on trucks. Performs manual labor incidental to the operation to which assigned. May be required to operate a chain saw in association with tree felling and brush clearance. Operates a dump truck up to 24 cubic yards. Operates hydraulic tree spade and high speed chipper/grinder. Uses transit to shoot grades for drainage and construction projects. Assists with various grounds construction projects such as concrete work, retaining walls and drainage projects. Assists other departments with trenching, excavation, rock work and dirt work as needed. May be required to operate mowers of various types. Assists with Ground's maintenance when needed. Travels to various work sites using a University vehicle. Moves equipment and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance. Regular and prompt attendance. Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required. Related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent, three years of experience in the operation of a variety of heavy equipment in construction and maintenance work, one of which involved concrete work, possession of a valid commercial driver's license with Class B endorsement and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage under the University of South Alabama.

Nature of Work The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform responsible skilled work in the operation of heavy construction equipment used in construction and maintenance activities in the Maintenance and Engineering (Landfill) Departments. Employees in this class will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment involved in construction and maintenance activities. Normal work is performed on one or two specific pieces of equipment; however, employee may be required to operate other types of equipment for special projects and during slack or seasonal periods. Work responsibilities are: operates various pieces of heavy equipment such as a track excavator, backhoe, lowboy tractor trailer, bulldozer, motor-grader, tack truck, asphalt spreader, steel wheel roller, vacuum jet rodder, dump truck, trash compactor, scraper (pan), and/or front-end loader; services and performs routine preventive maintenance and safety checks on assigned heavy equipment; supervises a work crew performing skilled, semiskilled and laborer duties, and contributes to the department objectives by accepting additional assignments and performing additional duties and referred tasks. Supervisory experience preferred.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered. Special Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Commercial Driver's License and insurable driving record to drive and operate heavy equipment used for construction, maintenance and repair. Some pieces of construction equipment will require a specific CDL Class (i.e. - Class “A”, Class “B”, or Class “B with tanker endorsement”). Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, sit for extended periods of time, and lift 75-100 pounds in order to inspect, operate, and maintain equipment. Must be willing to work outdoors while being exposed to weather conditions and work weekends, holidays and overtime as need to perform job duties. The Heavy EquipmentOperator supports the safe and efficient operation of the scrap yard by operating various material handling equipment relevant to a scrap yard, including material handlers, front-end loaders, skid steers, and other pieces of heavy or light equipment. Equipmentoperators may perform various duties, such as feeding the shredder feed conveyor, loading and unloading trucks, and moving materials safely about the yard. This position requires attention to detail and a strong emphasis on safety.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
Properly follow company and OSHA safety procedures; attend safety meetings and participate in safety program
Operate heavy equipment of various sizes, including material handler, loaders, skid steers, etc. in a safe and efficient manner
Duties include but are not limited to loading scrap material onto shredder feed conveyor, unloading vehicles, moving material throughout the yard, loading trucks, etc.
Perform daily pre-operation inspections on equipment, reporting any defects or needed repairs via CMMS app
Daily cleaning of equipment and greasing
Keep grounds clear of debris while maintaining safety standards
General labor duties that may include but not limited to sweeping, shoveling and general clean-up of any area and/or equipment throughout the yard
Effectively communicate over radio with teammates and truck drivers for traffic coordination, production, and safety procedures
Attend and participate in internal meetings and complete required training
Performs other related duties as assigned by management

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety manuals and procedure manuals
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
2 years of experience using heavy equipment
Ability to operateequipment under varying working conditions
Valid Driver's License
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sit for extended periods, up to 15 feet from ground level
Ability to lift, push, or pull a minimum of 50 pounds
Frequently climb up and down ladders; crouch and bend at the knee; stoop or bend at the waist; reach arms overhead; and twist and turn at the neck and trunk
Continually handle and grasp levers and dials; continuous leg and foot motion when using pedals
Work environment involves frequent and/or regular exposure to natural and unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises
