The number of employees at Lotus grew to over a thousand by 1985.

Jim Manzi had become CEO at Lotus in April 1986 and in July 1986 Mitch Kapor resigned as Chairman of the Board.
In January of 1987, Lotus Development filed suit against Paperback Software and separately against Mosaic Software claiming they had infinged on the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet software.
Later, in 1987, Microsoft released a version of Excel that could be used on their new Windows Operating System.
By 1988, Microsoft Excel was beginning to outsell its main competitor Lotus 1-2-3.
When Windows finally gained wide acceptance with Version 3.0 in late 1989 Excel was Microsoft's flagship product.
1989 Launch of Excel 2.2 for Macintosh.
1989: Rama Rao introduces a tunable laser.
In November of 1990, The Microsoft Office was released.
The company developed expertise in the production of pulsed solid state Nd:YAG lasers and changed its name to Continuum in 1990.

In May 1991 the company raised $3.6 million with an initial public offering on the NASDAQ. Sales in 1991 were about $250,000.
In 1991 Hoya Corporation, a Japanese optical glass manufacturer, bought the company.
In 1992 the tiny company acquired Quantronix, Inc., a much larger manufacturer of lasers for the scientific and industrial sectors.
According to Russo and Nafziger (1993) "The Court granted Lotus' motion dismissing the Software Arts' action and confirming that Lotus had acquired all rights, including all claims, as part of the earlier transaction."
In 1993, Microsoft released Version 5.0 of Excel which contained the Visual Basic Applications (VBA), more commonly referred to as macros.
In 1993, the first full year with Quantronix, Excel made a profit of $2.88 million on sales of $29.03 million.
In the summer of 1994, Excel/Quantronix introduced a laser welding system that could be used for the repair of dental crowns and bridges.
In October 1995 Excel paid $3.5 million for the Photo Research Division of Kollmorgen, which was rolled into the newly created subsidiary Photo Research Inc.
In 1995, Microsoft released Version 7.0 of Excel, more commonly known as Excel 95.
Hill worked closely with Antoine Dominic, who had joined Excel as chief financial officer in 1995 and became chief operating officer and president a few years later.

They accounted for 7 percent of sales in 1996 but were not a significant part of the company's operations by the end of the decade.
At the start of 1996, Rama Rao stepped down as CEO. Both he and his wife Triveni resigned their board positions to pursue other interests.
In 1997, Microsoft introduced versions of Excel that featured the paperclip office assistant, validations, and a new interface for VBA developers.
With five separate subsidiaries now, Excel's sales were $66 million in 1997.

Eventually, competing firms developed similar products, but Synrad still had a strong market share when Excel bought it in 1998 for $22 million.

VisiCalc became an almost instant success and provided many business people with an incentive to purchase a personal computer or an H-P 85 or 87 calculator from Hewlett-Packard (cf., Jim Ho, 1999). About 1 million copies of the spreadsheet program were sold during VisiCalc's product lifetime.
Bhd., based in Malaysia, was created in 1999 as a marketing and distribution subsidiary for Control Laser and Quantronix Products in southeast Asia.
Later, with Excell 2000, Microsoft introduced an improved clipboard, capable of holding multiple items at one time, and introduced the Excel Self-Repair.
In the fall of 2000, Antoine Dominic was promoted to CEO of Excel and J. Donald Hill stayed on as full-time chairman of the board.

2001: Control Systemation, Inc. is created.
Because Baublys had products similar to Excel's Orlando-based subsidiary Control Laser, the two companies consolidated their activities at the start of 2002, although they remained legally separate.
2002: Continuum is acquired.

In 2003, Ren Jamieson, Roy Flowers, and Tom Biegel founded Excel Technologies as a boutique firm with one vision: support the National Security mission of our government.
