Fresno City College company history timeline
On May 8, 1910, the Board of Education adopted the report and authorized the opening of Fresno Junior College in September of that year.
1910 was also the year Fresno City College, California’s first community college, was established, ultimately changing education in California.
Liddeke was hired to replace A. C. Olney who had left to become principal of Santa Barbara High School where he opened the state’s second community college in 1911.
In 1911, McLane founded the Fresno Normal School, the forerunner to California State University, Fresno.
The library was built to conform to the look of the Historic Old Administration Building, built in 1916.
17, 1916 and helped establish Fresno Junior College, (now Fresno City College) the first community college in California, and the second in the nation.
It wasn’t until 1917 that a new law provided funding for junior college courses.
When the California State University system added FSC to its rolls in 1946 and acquired the land for its current location on Shaw Avenue and Cedar Street, the "old campus" was given to the newly re-organized community college system.
Fresno Technical High School closed in 1950 and Fresno Junior College remained at that location until earthquake damage forced the junior college to find a new home in the late fifties.
By 1950 the technical high school program had been phased out and the district began looking for another campus.
Garcia said that the State Center Community College District closed the building in 1976 because it did not meet the standards of what was called the field act.
Its resurrection resulted from support of taxpayers in the 2002 bond measure, according to Ernie Garcia, educational adviser.
“They feared that if an earthquake hit, the whole thing could crumble, so the district had no choice but to close it,” Garcia said. “It was boarded up and fell into complete disrepair for about 35 years until it re-opened again for students in 2011.”
