1891

The Salvation Army ran their first Christmas Kettle street campaign in 1891.

1900

But the thing that unites fundraisers from 1900 to right now, is connecting communities to causes.

1905

In 1905, Pierce partnered with Charles Sumner Ward.

1913

Pierce and Ward raised the money, and by 1913, they were working internationally, running multi-million dollar campaigns using the techniques they’d developed.

1949

The first telethon was in 1949.

1959

In the winter of 1959, three noted fundraisers met to share a common vision.

1960

NSFR chartered in New York The National Society of Fund Raisers was officially chartered by the state of New York on June 21, 1960.

1961

The Society held its first annual meeting in New York City in February 1961 and elected a 12-person board of directors.

1963

The Society held its first conference in 1963 in Suffern, New York.

1965

By the end of 1965, NSFR had almost 500 members from 26 states, including Hawaii.

1966

The most famous of telethons began in New York City in 1966, when the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Labor Day Telethon, hosted by Jerry Lewis, first aired.

1973

President Goldstein's leadership When Henry 'Hank' Goldstein became volunteer president in 1973, NSFR has a debt of nearly $3,000.

1976

Sally Struthers became the celebrity spokesperson for the Christian Children’s Fund in 1976 and is credited with bringing the organization millions of dollars.

1977

During his tenure, NSFR hired its first paid president, Fletcher Hall, in 1977.

1980

Robert Blum became Chairman of the Board in March 1980.

1981

Over 400 members were certified in 1981, the first official year of the program.

1985

In 1985, the association celebrated its silver anniversary.

1991

Patricia F. Lewis, ACFRE, became president and CEO in March 1991.

In 1991, the National Assembly was created (later renamed the Delegate Assembly to reflect growing international membership) with proportional representation from all 119 chapters.

1992

In 1992, Ken Burnett wrote Relationship Fundraising.

A strong voice in legislative affairs As the association grew (membership climbed to 13,813 and 125 chapters in 1992), so did its involvement in national and state legislation.

1998

Maehara named president and CEO Paulette V. Maehara, CFRE, was named NSFRE's new president and CEO in June 1998.

As people became more comfortable paying for things online (Paypal was founded in 1998), online donations became more common.

2001

The new millennium created opportunities for the association to realize its full potential. It would all begin in January 2001 with a new name, the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

2010

It ran nationally, hosted by Lewis, until 2010, and then underwent a change in format— shorter and more appealing to modern audiences.

2016
