1839

With holdings that include objects ranging in date from the announcement of the medium’s invention in 1839 to the present day, the collection represents the full history of photography.

1854

George Eastman was born in 1854 in Waterville, New York, the same year that his father, George Washington Eastman, established Eastman’s Commercial College in Rochester.

1880

He spent three years in his mother’s kitchen experimenting with gelatin emulsions, and by 1880, he had invented and patented a dry-plate coating machine.

1891

1902

In 1902, George Eastman purchased the last 8.5 acres of the Marvin Culver Farm on East Avenue in Rochester.

1947

Founded in 1947 as an independent nonprofit institution, it is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives.

1949

1989

In 1989, the museum completed construction of a 73,000-square-foot building (more than 70 percent of which is below ground level) that included climate-controlled collection vaults, exhibition galleries, libraries, offices, and photographic conservation and film preservation labs.
