Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under limited supervision, coordinate research work in medical and related technical areas. The ResearchAssistant 3 will also perform data analysis on public and lab datasets using multi-omics approaches. The researchassistant will also perform wet lab work in field of neurodegenerative diseases, involving use of lab/research skills involving mouse breeding, behavioral testing of mice, and surgical procedures in mice. Other work includes Western blotting and cell cultures. This position will work with animals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
* Coordinate laboratory/ research activities. Plan and carry out projects in accordance with general plans. Perform statistical analysis on public/lab datasets for sc RNA-seq and proteomics results, as well as genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis to identify genetic variants in neurodegenerative diseases. (30%)
* Work closely with the principal investigator. Assist the principal investigator for funding application. (10%)
* Carry out complex research assignments of a non-routine nature. Perform research work in mouse models of neurodegenerative disease by breeding mice, tattooing or ear tagging mice, genotyping mouse tails by PCR and Real-time PCR, maintaining mouse databases, surgery (pre-, intra-, and post-operative procedures), and behavioral testing. (25%)
* Devise new protocols and techniques for research projects involving a high degree of skill and training. Learn new techniques such as RNA in situ hybridization and further develop existing techniques used in the laboratory. (10%)
* Evaluate adequacy of techniques; study and test new procedures and analyze data. Perform research work in the field of neurodegenerative diseases using cellular and molecular biology techniques, such as mammalian cell cultures, Western blotting, tissue and cell stating, and quantification and presentation of test results. (10%)

REQUIRED SKILLS

* Ability to operate laboratory equipment. This position will use Amersham ImageQuant 800 imager, LEICA CM1860 Cryostat, and Eppenforf Centrifuge 5415R.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Identify the working conditions and physical demands, which relate to the essential functions of the position, such as working indoors/ outdoors, working with exposures to hazards, etc. Include special considerations for the position, such as occasional travel or necessary overtime.
General laboratory environment. May have exposure to hazards. This position will be in contact with live mice and mouse tissues. Biosafety and IACUC training in addition to basic lab standard training will be required.

This position will conduct research, innovation and development of new grower-focused products. Although most product development is carried out in the greenhouse, this position does involve some laboratory and post-harvest work. Areas of focus for the Greenhouse Research Technician role will include (but not be limited to):
Conducts and assists with research experiments in the greenhouse for propagation, container production of bedding plants, or hydroponic production (deep-water culture and nutrient film technique) of bedding plants or leafy greens.
Manages greenhouse environmental controls.
Will contribute ideas, experiments and findings to research peers on a weekly basis.
Plans and runs greenhouse trials by setting up, trial maintenance and data collection, followed by data entry and analysis. Presents findings and data to research team.
Maintain trials, including irrigation, scouting for pests, and application of plant growth regulators and/or insecticides as needed for healthy crop production.
Pour-through methods to measure pH and EC of pot leachate.
Document trials with photos at the beginning and end, including photos of individual plant treatments. Transfer photos to computer and annotate/label crop photos.
Reads and reviews research literature to generate innovative ideas for new product development.
Identifies production or post-harvest related problems within industry, reviews literature to learn possible solutions and uses the information to improve or develop product solutions.
Aseptic culturing techniques (including media).
Maintain greenhouse and lab areas in a clean and organized manner.
Maintain inventory and requisition supplies and chemicals.
Who We Are Looking For:
An individual with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in horticulture, environmental sciences, biology or botany is preferred.
An individual who has a minimum of 1 to 2 years greenhouse floriculture or CEA experience is preferred.
An individual with knowledge of greenhouse operations and management is preferred.
An individual who has experience using Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and SAS statistics is beneficial.

Summer on the Cuyahoga (SOTC) / Warshawsky Fellowship in European Paintings and Sculpture, 1500-1800
In support of the forthcoming reinstallation of a major gallery of European paintings and sculpture ca. 1550 - 1700, the European Paintings and Sculpture team seeks an intern to assist in researching the objects to be displayed and updating / completing their online catalogue entries, including didactics, bibliography, exhibition history, and provenance. These 50 objects are, primarily, Italian paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. The chosen candidate will: review the extant catalogue entries; consult the relevant curatorial, collections management, archival and conservation files; conduct research in the Ingalls Library and online; and reach out to external scholars, as needed. They will also edit and/or compose new didactics for each object, including “Did You Know?” facts, digital didactics, and wall labels.
Over the course of the internship, the selected candidate will update the Collections Online entries for the objects to be featured in the forthcoming reinstallation of the Reid Gallery of Italian Baroque Paintings and Sculpture. This includes the digital didactics, bibliography, exhibition history, and provenance for each object. Where appropriate, they will also write wall labels to accompany these objects in the galleries. By the end of the internship, every object will have updated and completed Collections Online entries and accompanying wall labels.
This internship will provide the intern with a behind the scenes look at how a curatorial department prepares for a reinstallation. They will also learn and/or develop their research skills though their work with curatorial files, archival sources, the library, and external scholars. They will also develop their writing and editing skills by reviewing extant, and composing new, didactics.
Eligibility Requirements

Allegheny, CWRU, Colgate, Cornell, Denison, Oberlin, Ohio Wesleyan, Smith, the University of Chicago, Miami (OH) University, Washington & Jefferson College, or Cleveland State University Mandel Honors College

Working under limited supervision, the ResearchAssistant 3 will coordinate research activities on projects related to cardiac contractile function. Oversee inventory, maintain stock and solutions, monitor instrument performance, and maintain cleanliness and order of the lab. May assist in developing improved techniques, projection methods or procedures and histology lab procedures and policies as part of process improvements and updated procedures as required by regulatory standards. Perform quality control (QC) on finished slide preparations and maintain required quality control documentation for samples and instrument operations. Maintain and troubleshoot equipment operation failures. Assist in processing research requests from internal and external clients. * Conduct a series of experiments to supply scientific information as part of a larger project. Accession samples accurately in a BSL2 lab, utilizing standard precautions. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. Train new staff; direct the work of students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree and 1 to 3 years of related experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 2 to 4 years of experience required.

* Punctuality and the ability to meet consistent attendance is required. This position is considered essential and as such, employees are expected to report to work when the campus is closed [under specific CWRU guidelines] so as not to interrupt activities related to patient care.
* Ability to operate essential laboratory equipment [tissue processor, embedding station, automated stainer], including troubleshooting operation failures.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals from a broad spectrum of disciplines, technical and educational backgrounds within the department, School and University, and with individuals outside the University.
* Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain patient confidentiality. Must abide by regulations from Federal and other regulatory agencies and perform annual training.
* Must participate in NDPSC continuing education requirements and successfully perform competency assessments and proficiency testing.
* Effective problem-solving skills; must demonstrate sound judgment and good decision-making.
* Must abide by all CWRU and NPDPSC laboratory safety standards and meet training requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS
General laboratory environment in a CLIA regulated high-complexity environment. May have exposure to hazards.
Standard laboratory conditions with some hazardous chemicals. Special hazards include biohazardous (potentially infectious) human brain and cerebrospinal fluid and other bloodborne pathogens and chemicals. The following personal protective equipment required: appropriate gloves, protective eyewear, laboratory coat, and safety shoes.
