About the Role
We are looking for candidates with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience operating heavy equipment machinery. This position can be physically demanding at times and includes long seat hours. Essential Responsibilities
Performs any combination of the following duties on construction projects, usually working in a utility capacity and by transferring from one task to another.

Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
Load and unload equipment from vehicles and trailers.
Complete required paperwork, forms and records as required.
Coordinate machine actions with crew members in response to hand or audio signals.
Ability to work without close supervision once directed on task.
Obeys and follows all safety rules on the job site and encourages others to do the same.
Maintains a good relationship with co-workers and works well with others to accomplish a task.

JOB SUMMARY
This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Streets and Drainage Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. The skills, knowledge, and abilities required for full performance must be acquired prior to assuming the position. Incumbents must possess skill in operating at least one or more pieces of very heavy construction equipment specific to a particular work site and have the ability to learn to operate other equipment. The employee must possess all necessary licenses and certifications prior to operating the assigned equipment. Essential job functions include: driving and/or operating various pieces of light, heavy and/or very heavy construction or maintenance equipment used in activities, such as, construction excavation, asphalt stripping etc., and assuming responsibility for following all safety and maintenance procedures relating to the proper operation and condition of the assigned equipment. The primary equipment used may include: earth movers, large motor graders, large bulldozers, large asphalt rollers and pavers, large cranes, Gradalls; Hoptos; scrapers; cranes; tandem trucks; and tractor-trailer rigs. A Construction EquipmentOperator II may also be expected to complete specific tasks including, but not limited to: operating front-end loaders for cutting slope; operating backhoes when digging around underground gas/electrical lines or large water mains; and interpreting construction plans or drawing and performing operations necessary to comply with plan or drawing specifications. Specialized attachments such as snowplows, trailers, winches, etc. may be used to complete less routine job assignments. The incumbent may work independently in delivering materials and equipment or in conjunction with other workers and equipment while on construction or maintenance projects. In the absence of a supervisor the worker may be expected to assume lead-worker responsibility for other employees and equipment and effective completion of projects. Due to equipment malfunctions, limited worker availability, or adverse weather conditions, this classification may be expected to perform crew or maintenance-type tasks. Work instructions are received verbally and in writing, with work reviewed by a supervisor through inspection and written reports or upon completion for compliance with blueprints and overall quality.

Basic Purpose
Positions in this job family are responsible for operating power equipment and performing related
tasks in the maintenance and repair of highways.
Typical Functions
* Operatesequipment or heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front- end
loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, snow removal equipment and other
equipment as needed.
* Performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
* Repairs failures in the roadway shoulders or bridge decks.

* Provides traffic control assistance using a stop/slow sign or flag to direct highway traffic.
* Applies herbicide to highway right-of-ways to control weeds and other unwanted vegetation.

Level Descriptor
Level I
This is the basic level where incumbents work under close supervision operating and maintaining power equipment and performing related unskilled and semiskilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of highways.
Level II
This is the career level where incumbents perform skilled work at the full performance level in operating heavy equipment used in highway construction or repair and also perform a variety of routine highway maintenance duties.

Education and Experience requirements at this level are none.
Level II:
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of one year of experience in operating heavy equipment.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver's license at time of employment. Some agencies may require possession of a valid Oklahoma commercial driver's license, class A or B with appropriate endorsements referenced in United States Department of Transportation Title 47, Chapter 6, Section 101 et seq. at time of appointment. Persons appointed to positions at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation or the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority must possess or obtain a commercial driver's license, class A, no later than five months from the date of appointment. ODOT employees are required to have a CDL tank vehicle endorsement.
Applicants must take and pass drug test prior to appointment. Such tests will be administered through the appointing agency. This requirement is referenced in 49 Code of Federal Regulation, parts 40 and 382.

A Construction EquipmentOperator I may be expected to complete specific tasks using the following pieces of equipment: front-end loaders, graders, dozers, slurry seal machines, tractors, backhoes, tandem trucks, tractor-trailer rigs, vectors, and slope mowers. Specialized attachments such as snowplows, trailers, winches, etc., may be used to complete specific job assignments. At the discretion of the department or division, the incumbent may operateequipment such as snow brooms, snow-blowers, power brooms, and crawlers infrequently or in emergencies. The incumbent may work independently in delivering materials and equipment or in conjunction with other workers and equipment while on construction or maintenance projects. In the absence of a supervisor the incumbent may be expected to assume lead-worker responsibility for other employees, equipment, and effective completion of projects. Due to equipment malfunctions, limited worker availability, or adverse weather conditions, this classification may be expected to perform crew or maintenance-type tasks.
