Planet is a global company with employees working remotely world wide and joining us from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and The Netherlands.
About the Role:
As a ManufacturingTechnician at Planet, you'll work directly on the flight hardware that goes to space, assembling imaging satellites with complex bills of materials. You will partner with technicians and engineers who care about quality, precision, and mission success. This role is well-suited for someone who is detail-oriented, methodical, and consistent in their approach to work, with a track record of reading and following instructions carefully, taking pride in clean and organized workmanship, and communicating early when more context or clarification is needed. You'll work in a lab and cleanroom environment where production can move quickly, timelines constantly shift based on launch schedules and program priorities, and the quality you bring to each build directly supports Planet's mission to deliver reliable data from space.
This is a full-time, in-office position based in our San Francisco office 5 days per week.
Impact You'll Own:
Perform electro-mechanical assembly and integration of production and prototype satellite systems, following work instructions and drawings.
Assemble a wide range of hardware (e.g., fasteners, harnesses, brackets, subassemblies), using calibrated tools and fixtures to achieve consistent, repeatable results.
Handle and install sensitive components with care, including cleaning parts, epoxy application, torquing fasteners, and routing cables to defined standards.
Support test technicians and engineers by setting up satellites and subassemblies on test fixtures, making required mechanical and electrical connections, and assisting with debug activities.
Communicate via Slack, Jira, and other team tools to keep engineers and stakeholders informed of build status, issues, and risks.
Help debug failed units by performing careful rework and providing clear feedback about what you observe on the hardware and in the data.
Maintain an organized, safe, and FOD-free workspace, including proper housekeeping, tool control, and ESD-safe handling where required, and consistently follow lab and cleanroom gowning protocols (lab coat, hair net, gloves, booties, ESD straps).
Contribute to the development and refinement of work instructions and build documentation by flagging unclear steps, mis-matched parts, or frequent sources of error.
Cross-train across multiple assembly areas and product lines to support shifting priorities and keep production moving.
Work with our in-house software to track each stage of the build, stay organized and up to date, upload photos, and follow step-by-step guides.
What You Bring:
4+ years of hands-on technician experience in production, manufacturing, aerospace, or other precision hardware environments, with experience building multiple units rather than only one-off prototypes.
Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Experience in high-paced production is strongly preferred over purely R&D or prototype-only work.
Ability to follow detailed build procedures and work instructions from start to finish, with a strong track record of completing work accurately.
Solid hands-on skills with small components and delicate hardware, such as torquing fasteners, cable and harness routing, connector assembly and crimping, adhesive/epoxy work, and lifting and moving sensitive parts.
Proficient communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with technicians, engineers, and leads on the production floor.
Solid organizational and problem-solving skills, with a steady, methodical approach to prioritizing work and meeting deadlines in a production environment that can be high-paced and occasionally stop-and-go.
A proactive mindset: you surface issues early, ask questions when requirements are unclear, and raise concerns when something in the build does not match the documentation.
Familiarity with proper lab and/or cleanroom safety and housekeeping practices, including ESD controls and maintaining clean, organized work areas.
Experience working on assemblies with a BOM and understanding part numbers and revisions in a production setting.
What Makes You Stand Out:
Experience assembling flight hardware, high-reliability electronics, or other mission-critical systems at scale.
Background in high-volume or high-throughput production where dozens of units are built and delivered on tight schedules.
Experience using issue-tracking tools (e.g., Jira) and writing clear, informative tickets to capture build issues or nonconformances.

Technical Lead, Evaluation
Measurabl 4.2
Manufacturing technician job in San Francisco, CA
We're looking for a technical leader with a bias for quality, systems thinking, and impact to spearhead the engineering behind Station A's geospatial evaluation platform-the engine that identifies the most financially viable clean energy opportunities in the market. This role thrives in an early-stage, fast-moving environment while building the right long-term systems: balancing speed with maintainability, enabling the team to scale, and creating the technical foundation for the next decade of growth.
About The Role
In the next 30 years, every part of our built environment will need to transform to support a more resilient, independent, and decarbonized grid. Rising demand from data centers, electrification of everything, and an aging power grid create both pressure and opportunity for clean energy deployment.
The problem? Origination. Most clean energy projects fail long before they are built because developers spend enormous time and money qualifying sites, collecting data, assessing interconnection, and navigating zoning, only to discover too late that projects will not pencil. In fact, as much as 80% of projects stall or die, representing billions in wasted costs and years of lost time.
At Station A, we are solving this bottleneck. Our evaluation platform combines geospatial data, analytics, and automation to rapidly identify the most financially and technically viable clean energy opportunities before a project starts. In the past year alone, we have evaluated over 85 GW of projects, surfacing billions in potential investment.
This role is about leading the technology behind that evaluation engine, scaling it to be the fastest, most accurate, and most trusted way to identify clean energy opportunities in the market. By joining, you will help build the technical foundation that enables cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable power for businesses and communities across the country.
Whether or not you have worked in climate tech before, if you want your engineering leadership to tackle a mission-critical challenge at the intersection of energy, infrastructure, and technology, we would love to talk.
Who We Are
Station A is a technology company reimagining how clean energy is bought and sold. Our remote-first team is made up of climate-minded technologists, strategists, and operators committed to making climate action a no-brainer for everyone.
We combine proprietary software with industry expertise to guide commercial real estate owners and operators through their decarbonization journey, starting with evaluation of their portfolios and culminating in transactions through our clean energy marketplace.
Compensation
Reports to: Head of Product
Preferred Locations
San Francisco, Los Angeles, elsewhere in CA (Remote OK)
We believe in pay transparency. The annual base salary for this role is $165k - $210k, with performance-based annual bonus and stock options. Learn more about our benefits here.
What You'll Do
As Technical Lead, Evaluation Technology, you'll take ownership of the core geospatial and data-driven systems that power Station A's marketplace. You will:
Own the architecture and scalability of our evaluation platform: designing, refining, and growing the engine that identifies viable clean energy opportunities across hundreds of thousands of buildings
Raise the technical bar by instilling best practices across the SDLC: test coverage, CI/CD, system observability, and multi-phase refactors
Mentor and force-multiply: coach engineers through pairing, design reviews, and example-setting, helping the team level up technically and culturally
Think in systems: evolve not just code but the processes and collaboration patterns that help the engineering team grow sustainably
Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, Data, and Marketplace teams to ensure our evaluation stack is fast, scalable, and tightly aligned with business goals
Partner with leadership as a thought partner on technology decisions, helping guide Station A's long-term platform strategy
Requirements
You might be a fit if you have…
8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant full-stack and data engineering exposure
Proven track record leading complex, system-level projects from design through delivery
Strong experience with Python (preferred), TypeScript, and SQL databases (PostgreSQL), including query optimization
Comfort with geospatial technologies (e.g. Mapbox/MapLibre, Shapely, PostGIS) and building data pipelines for large-scale spatial analysis
Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, and cloud infrastructure (GCP or equivalent)
The ability to mentor engineers and foster a high-performing, learning-oriented culture
Excellent communication skills-you can align technical tradeoffs with business value and make complex systems understandable to both engineers and non-engineers
Bonus points for…
Deep Python knowledge (e.g. Pydantic, Poetry) and passion for maintainable, well-structured code
Experience with data engineering tools (Airflow, dbt, Kafka, Spark) to support scalable evaluations
Exposure to AI/ML applications, especially for geospatial or optimization problems
Domain experience in clean energy, sustainability, or climate tech
Why this role matters
Technical leadership capacity: We're understaffed in strong technical leadership. You'll shape both the system and the team that builds it
Systems thinking: You'll help us manage technical debt intentionally, and redesign core pieces of our platform as we scale
Mentorship: Your example will level up the engineering org, embedding best practices across the team
Capacity growth: Every line of code you and your team ship enables Station A to scale our business model from service-heavy to product-driven
Location & Travel
Preferred: San Francisco, Los Angeles, or California-based to align with core engineering hours and enable periodic in-person collaboration
Anticipated travel: 1x/year for all-company retreat; quarterly engineering meetups (2-3 days each)
Benefits
We're committed to supporting a healthy, sustainable life outside of work:
Remote-friendly work environment (U.S.-based) with coworking options
Flexible PTO
Monthly remote work stipend ($50/mo or $600/yr)
Learning & development budget to support your professional growth
Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance (including FSA and HSA options)
401(k) plan, with matching on the roadmap
12-15 paid holidays annually
Why You Might Be Excited About This Role
You see geospatial evaluation at scale as both a technical and climate challenge worth solving
You care about grid resiliency and energy independence and see geospatial analysis as a powerful lever for accelerating deployment
You believe evaluation should be accurate, scalable, and transparent, and you are excited to design systems that make project qualification faster and more reliable
You see the potential for technology to eliminate waste in the origination process, where today most projects stall or fail before they are even built
You're motivated by the idea that every improvement to our evaluation engine unlocks billions in viable projects and accelerates carbon reduction at scale
You enjoy mentoring engineers and leaving systems better than you found them
You want your engineering leadership to make a tangible difference at the intersection of energy, infrastructure, and technology
Our Commitment
We believe diverse perspectives fuel better ideas and stronger outcomes. If you are excited about this role-even if you don't meet 100% of the qualifications-we encourage you to apply.
Station A is an equal opportunity employer committed to building an inclusive, respectful workplace. Hiring decisions are based solely on qualifications, merit, and business needs.
