Primary Purpose:

Essential Functions:
Performs waived, moderate, and/or highly complex analytic processes without direct supervision for which they are qualified, trained, and demonstrate competency according to established lab standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Operates, calibrates and troubleshoots laboratory instruments and ensures proper functioning of laboratory equipment. Recognizes when professional service is required and requests service if instrument is covered under a service contract. Otherwise, reports service needs to supervisor for resolution.
Performs quality control (QC) procedures as specified in lab section SOPs and maintains QC records and documentation necessary to meet the standards of accrediting agencies.
Follows appropriate specimen collection, handling, transport, and recording procedures.
Processes data, verifies accuracy, and enters data in the laboratory information system, along with appropriate explanatory or interpretive information in a timely manner.
Monitors QC and assists in data collection for Quality Assurance (QA) indicators, as assigned.
Performs internal and external proficiency testing.
Meets output measures as defined by individual group policy. Assists with workload in any section where competency has been verified and is current.
Recognizes critical patient results and follows the defined process for reporting them.
Recognizes unexpected results, errors, and problems with patient tests and escalates as required.
Understands the theory of laboratory procedures and evaluates all potential causes of unexpected test results.
Correlates clinical and laboratory data with pathologic states to determine result validity.
Evaluates exceptions to established criteria and special circumstances related to specimen collection and integrity to determine impact on testing.
Recognizes appropriate and inappropriate selection of basic and complex lab tests.
Prioritizes order of testing and coordinates general work flow in assigned area.
Resolves and documents resolution of all QC results which fail lab criteria and institutes corrective action.
Integrates and relates lab data to investigate possible discrepancies and contributes to the resolution.
Trains new and current employees on procedures and policies.
Provides technical information and/or instruction to clients, new employees, medical students, residents, peers, physicians, and the public as requested and where appropriate.
Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies.
Directs workflow activities and reviews daily data reports as assigned.
Performs assessment of peers performing testing as a qualified observer after two years of experience not including NY testing.
Other duties as assigned.

Job Summary and Qualifications
As a Medical Laboratory Scientist at our facility you will be an integral part of our Laboratory team. In this role:
· You will be responsible for receiving blood specimens, performing blood tests, and studying the morphology of the components of blood.
· You will perform various routine or special clinical laboratory tests in one or more sections of the Laboratory using automated equipment, manual testing, and microscopic analysis to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.
· You will be responsible for maintaining and using various equipment in the Laboratory including automated, chemistry analyzers, ion-specific electrodes, osmometers, and other analyzers.
· You will perform antibody screening, antibody identification, and cross-matching procedures required in the administration of blood/blood components and identify antibodies in donors or patient's blood that could react adversely during transfusion.
· You will notify nursing units and/or physicians of critical lab values.
· You will implement new testing methods, products, and instrumentation as appropriate to keep department current with technology.
Qualifications:
· Graduate of an accredited Medical Technology program (Associate's degree acceptable) and/or a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology with appropriate certification (may be hired prior to graduation upon completion of required course work for graduation).
· Nationally recognized certification as a Medical Technologist (MT/MLS or MLT) from the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent.
o This licensure must be completed within 1 year of hire.
· One year of experience working in a hospital or other clinical laboratory setting is preferred; new graduates will be considered.
· American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course (BLS or BCLS) and Certification.

Responsibilities
Executes builds in the Histotrac LIS and related laboratory clinical applications, ensuring quality outcomes and compliance with standards.

**Registered Medical Lab Scientist ($35.25-$54.39 based on experience)**
+ Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory/medical technology science or chemical, physical, biological, or equivalent. Education must be obtained through an accredited institution. Applicants with chemical, physical, biological science or equivalent bachelor's degree will be subject to education verification which may include transcript/credit evaluation by Laboratory Services Quality Assurance leadership, Required.
+ OR - Completion of course work and internship requirements in a qualified MLS program and eligibility to sit for the BOC. Certification must be completed and documented within 6 months of hire to remain in the registered MLS role, Required.
+ Medical Technologist / Medical Lab Scientist ASCP certification or equivalent certification as approved by Manager and Human Resources. Certification must be maintained to remain in job, Required.
+ Flexibility to work a variety of shifts that may include weekends, holidays, nights and on-call, Required.
+ Montana applicants must have state licensure or temporary state licensure, Required.
+ Foreign applicants must submit a foreign transcript evaluation by an acceptable agency approved by Laboratory Quality Assurance, Required.
+ Basic Life Support certification (BLS) for healthcare providers at sites that require certification, Required.
**Unregistered Medical Lab Scientist ($29.14-$44.94 based on experience)**
+ Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory/medical technology science, or chemical, physical, biological, or equivalent. Education will be verified with transcript/credit evaluation by laboratory services quality assurance leadership. Education must be obtained through an accredited institution. Degree will be verified, required.
+ Flexibility to work a variety of shifts that may include weekends, holidays, nights and on-call, Required.
+ Bachelor's degree within 30 days of hire. Must meet CLIA requirements for high complexity testing, required.
+ Montana applicants must have state licensure, required.
+ Military training and experience may substitute for bachelor's degree.
+ 1 year of lab experience, Preferred.
+ Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
+ Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
+ Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
