Ensure specimens received by the laboratory are acceptable for testing by applying the appropriate criteria and change or prepare reagents, controls as necessary and records such in log. Label, accession and distribute specimens so that integrity of patient identification is maintained throughout processing and inoculate specimens from all areas of the body on appropriate media. Initiate orders for blood and/or blood components from the appropriate blood supplier. Follow hospital/laboratory safety and infection control policies and report variances to section supervisors as they occur. Determine appropriateness of manual methods, micro-methods, back-up procedures and initiate such procedures. Use computer system to compare patient results to previous results during the same encounter and investigate discrepancies and report test results within established departmental turn-around times after verifying documentation is complete and accurate. Prepare and interpret gram stains and other wet and dry preparations for bacteriology and parasitology. Perform all routine procedures including, but not limited to, ABORH typing and retesting, antibody detection and identification, compatibility testing and serology procedures. Prepare blood components while maintaining aseptic technique and proper storage. Evaluate serological reactivity to assist with antibody identification and crossmatch incompatibilities. Follow universal precautions at all times when dealing with blood or body fluids and disinfect counter tops at the end of the shift with appropriate cleaner. Operate, calibrate, conduct performance checks, and maintain any clinical laboratory instrument or equipment after orientation, troubleshoot basic instrument malfunctions, and document in the appropriate action log. Determine when an instrument's service representative should be contacted for assistance. Analyze quality control material for each procedure, record values according to section policy, and report to technical supervisor when results are outside established limits. Perform comparison studies of precision, accuracy and linearity on new or existing procedures, record proficiency surveys, and route form and reagent quality control as specified in the quality control manuals. Assist in the clinical orientation of new or less skilled laboratory personnel as requested by the section Supervisor. Assures proper packaging and disposal of waste chemicals. Maintain proper documentation (log) of generated waste. Perform order or result entry (manual or computerized) and reviews information for accuracy before verification. Document critical call value notification, duplicate checking, date and time of performance, technologist initials and expected age related ānormalā values on all down-time reports as appropriate. Check instruments and benches assigned for appropriate reagent and supply levels and replenishes and notify appropriate person of low inventory items or of any out-of-date reagents contaminated or otherwise unacceptable, record receipt of supplies and reagents, properly initialing and dating the inventory items at receipt, time put into use and expiration, and ensure adequate inventory levels are available for incoming shifts. Receive tissue specimens from surgery, autopsy and the nursing floors, perform proper processing and preservation of tissue specimens, comply with proper specimen storage and preservation of all other non-tissue specimens for non-core laboratory. Prepare necessary reagents and collection supplies for assisting with bone marrow aspirations according to physician orders, assist physicians in the procurement of bone marrow specimens, perform special stains and follow protocols as appropriate.

Responsibilities
Perform clinical laboratory testing for nucleic acid-based diseases for Department of Defense (DoD) beneficiaries and on survey samples submitted to the laboratory for quality assurance and proficiency testing.
Routinely performs testing on blood, cells, cell cultures, and various tissue samples from patients, deceased individuals, and fetuses (prenatal testing).
Must maintain sample tracking and integrity meticulously to prevent cross- contamination of samples. Nucleic acid testing is subject to a multitude of constantly changing variables, which can affect the results.
Demonstrates high-level laboratory problem solving skills and analytical abilities to successfully perform assigned laboratory testing.
Receives packages containing samples, and verifies the presence of the correct contents and paperwork, the adequacy of the sample, and the documentation.
Creates labels and folders for the test to be performed. Records the samples on the correct worksheets in the laboratory, in computer information management systems, and on Excel spreadsheets.
Extracts nucleic acid from samples utilizing multiple established protocols. Assesses the adequacy of the nucleic acid obtained, quantifies final nucleic acid samples, and documents results of nucleic acid extraction processes. Performs calculations to determine appropriate dilutions of nucleic acid and/or quantities to be used for various testing procedures.
Performs a variety of nucleic acid-based analytical procedures including (but not limited to) polymerase chain reactions (PCR), Southern analysis, allele-specific oligonucleotide hybridization, short-tandem repeat length analysis, DNA or RNA sequencing, restriction enzyme digestion, capillary or gel-based electrophoresis, microarrays, and allele-specific PCR. Utilizes computerized robotics, column and array-based sequencers, various electrophoresis and hybridization equipment, and photographic and digital imaging equipment to perform and document testing. Analyzes and interprets the results obtained.
Performs PCR to amplify regions of nucleic acid of interest using protocols established in the laboratory. Pours and runs (via electrophoresis) agarose gels to assess the adequacy of the PCR products obtained. Documents the results utilizing digital and/or photographic imaging systems.
If PCR reactions are not successful, performs problem-solving steps to determine the cause of the failure and corrects the problem. Must repeat PCR reactions on individual samples as required to obtain adequate results.
PCR must be performed without contamination. Perform all PCR reactions with contamination free controls.
Correctly tracks nucleic acid/PCR samples to maintain chain of identity and prevent sample mix-up.
Achieves the laboratory standards for turn-around time.
Documents the results of testing in patient folders and laboratory information management systems (LIMS). Presents testing results to the laboratory director for verification and final reporting. Types draft versions of laboratory reports. Verifies and certifies results in LIMS using established protocols.
Maintains data on testing and PCR failure rates, problems encountered, and solutions to those problems. Tabulates data and performs statistical evaluation of data for Quality Assurance monitoring.
Participates in the development and evaluation of new testing equipment and/or techniques.
Collates data and documents validation studies on new testing procedures developed in the lab, as assigned by the laboratory director.
Generates operating instructions (OIs) in accordance with established guidelines and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) for new procedures, as assigned by the laboratory director or designee.
Maintains assigned equipment by performing and documenting required daily checks, scheduling and/or performing preventive maintenance, and obtaining repairs as required. Makes assigned solutions for general lab use according to established laboratory procedures. Monitors levels of assigned supply items and orders additional supplies as necessary to maintain adequate stock on hand in the laboratory.
Answers laboratory telephone calls, which may include calls from other laboratories or providers seeking information. Correctly provides information about test availability, sample and consent requirements, availability of forms, and other general lab information to callers. Correctly refers callers to the genetic counselor, a supervisor, and/or lab director as indicated.
Actively participates in preparations for CAP, Joint Commission and other inspections.
Adheres to infection control procedures including use of personal protective equipment and proper disposal of bio-hazardous waste.

Registered as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) at (or within 1 year) of job start.
Experience:
A minimum of one (1) year experience preferred.

Physical Demands:
Stands, turns, bends, stoops, lifts, climbs, and uses many physical motions in performing day-to-day activities. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and do a great deal of walking without experiencing undue fatigue. May be exposed to communicable disease or radiation.
Work involves being able to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels, with or without correction. Must demonstrate the ability to communicate, speak, and enunciate to express/exchange ideas and detailed information in person and on the telephone. Work requires a minimum standard of visual acuity, with or without correction, with the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus, i.e. shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor to forms that are closer to compare data at close vision.
Mental Demands:
Must demonstrate keen mental faculties/assessment and decision making abilities. Must demonstrate superior communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone. Must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. Must possess emotional stability conducive to dealing with high stress levels. Must demonstrate ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Attention to detail and the ability to multiātask in complex situations is required. Must have the ability to maintain collaborative and respect working relationships throughout SRHS and other organizations.
Must possess the ability to function in a clinical capacity and possess skills to perform functions and duties as required by the specialty area and understand that errors and poor image quality may have serious consequences for patients. Must demonstrate supervisory skills and knowledge for supervision of other disciplines working on the same team. Must possess skills to problem solve patient care issues and/or technical issues with physicians. Must demonstrate appropriate clinical judgment and apply professional skills to a patient population of all ages.
Special Demands:
Must possess superior customer service skills and professional etiquette. Must possess proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer (must be keyboard proficient) and other office technology (i.e., telephone, fax, etc.). Must have working knowledge of MS Outlook and Word.
Job requires traveling throughout the SRHS service area - with the employee providing his/her own transportation. Must have a valid driver license.
Work requires the ability to function independently, adapt to workload demands, set priorities, and understand and set goals. Must possess highly developed organizational, planning and management writing skills. Must understand the fundamentals of automated data processing, and be able to quickly gain a detailed understanding of complex computerized and non-computerized information. Must possess proficient knowledge of budgeting, general ledger and financial statement preparation.
