The transdisciplinary team of scientists, together with global partners, is developing new perennial grain crops, like Kernza©, and diverse cropping systems that function within nature's limits while researching the social transformation required for a just, perennial human future. Annual Seasonal Positions: Summer: May-August 2026 Harvest Season: September-December 2026 Winter Season: January-April 2027 Positions Summary We seek individuals with full-time availability to serve as Research Assistants. This role involves participating in seasonal research activities across all TLI programs, including planting, harvesting, weeding, threshing, plant tissue collection, data entry, lab maintenance, and greenhouse work. Assistants work primarily eight hour days, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with an hour lunch break, scheduled weekly by research programs as needed. Some individuals may be assigned to a certain lab or task as a program specific research assistant. The position provides diverse hands-on experience while requiring flexibility to perform manual, repetitive tasks both indoors and outdoors for extended periods. Kansas weather is highly variable and can be uncomfortable for months at a time, especially with high humidity and temperatures coupled with limited access to shade or air conditioning. While we are mindful and intentional about our exposure to these conditions, they can be challenging and require good body awareness and proactive measures to protect oneself from dehydration and over-exposure to the sun. You must be prepared to take these measures and have the endurance to work in a challenging physical environment. We feel that the best of human company makes this work rewarding and even fun despite the degrees, but that does not make it easy. Prolonged periods of working outdoors in adverse conditions, including temperatures in excess of 95 degrees Fahrenheit Work in exposed field and laboratory research settings. About the Role As the Loadout Leadman at Prestressed Concrete, you will play a crucial role in the handling, staging, and loading of production materials. You will operate cranes to unload production from the beds, transport it to the yard, and stage it appropriately for shipping. Your responsibilities include overseeing the organization of products in the yard, delegating tasks related to product staging, and running various equipment to move and handle production materials. This position requires hands-on experience with cranes and yard equipment, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently. What Youll Do Oversee and manage the loadout crew, delegating tasks to ensure efficient and safe operations. Operate forklifts proficiently to lift, transport, and place precast/prestressed concrete products safely and accurately. Assist with and oversee all aspects of loading and unloading trailers and semis with production pieces, ensuring proper rigging, load stability, and adherence to quality standards. Drive swamper trucks, yard trucks, forklifts, and small tractors to move trailers, materials, and equipment as needed. Strip concrete pieces from beds and prepare them for the next production cycle while supervising the teams efforts. Maintain an organized and safe work environment, performing routine yard maintenance and ensuring compliance with all safety protocols. Conduct pre-operation inspections of equipment and oversee regular maintenance of forklift, trucks, and other machinery. Communicate with supervisors and other departments to ensure smooth operations and resolve any issues promptly. Provide training, mentorship, and guidance to loadout crew members to develop their skills and ensure high performance. Keep accurate records of daily operations, equipment usage, and any incidents, reporting them to management as required. What Were Looking For Proven experience operating heavy equipment such as swamper trucks, yard trucks, forklifts, and small tractors. Strong understanding of rigging, load stability, and safety practices. Leadership skills with the ability to effectively manage and motivate a team. Excellent communication skills for coordinating with crew members and other departments. Ability to read blueprints, load charts, and other project specifications is a plus. Physical capability to lift heavy objects and work in various weather conditions. Physical Requirements Ability to lift, push, and pull heavy loads (up to 75 lbs.). Comfortable working in an outdoor environment with exposure to varying weather conditions. Ability to stand, bend, and move continuously during the shift. Working Conditions This position requires working outdoors in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow. The Loadout Leadman must be comfortable performing physically demanding tasks and ensuring team safety while operating in these environments.
