What does the Phlebotomist do? (including but not limited to) Under direct supervision, is responsible for the collecting and processing of specimens from patients. Processes properly labeled specimens according to local bloodbank policy. * Operates designated laboratory equipment as directed. * Uses equipment effectively, skillfully and efficiently. Maintains equipment and work area as directed. * Performs waived lab testing under CLIA guidelines for personnel. Records proper lot numbers of all controls, calibrator, and reagents for waived lab tests. * Complies with regulatory agency standards. Consistently determines proper priorities when organizing daily tasks and is able to adjust schedule in view of STAT's, out-patients and time draws. Stores specimen sample according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection container/ tube, accurately labels, follows different procedures as outlined by specific to protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen. Department: Research Operations Shift: First Shift (United States of America) Standard Weekly Hours: 40 The Laboratory Phlebotomist performs positive patient identification and collection of various laboratory specimens on inpatients and outpatients, as needed. Receives specimens into the lab reception area, inputs specimen information into the laboratory information system and requests patient registration as necessary. Phlebotomists maintain specimen integrity during specimen collection, transport, and processing of samples received in the laboratory. Communicates specimen issues to caregivers. Identifies patients and labels specimens accurately according to established procedures. Blood Banking errors must be evaluated case by case for severity of the error, and in some cases no errors will be tolerated. Consistently collects the proper specimens for tests to be performed. Writes date, time, and initials on labels and requisitions. Consistently completes routine blood sample tests within 5-8 minutes, difficult cases within 15 minutes. Maintains URL collection logs at assigned facilities. Interacts and collects specimens in multiple settings e.g. URPG offices, hospitals, nursing homes, businesses, physician offices, schools, and patient homes. Performs driving duties, obeys traffic laws, and maintains the care and fueling of company vehicles. Performs audits of requisitions, monitors test orders at facilities, and insures accuracy of patient demographics, insurances, and ICD-10 codes for entering into the LIS. Assists clients with training in the LIS and familiarization with data entry protocols. Assists clients with training in specimen collection protocols and laboratory regulations on specimen labeling, time critical tests, specimen temperature, and specimen transport requirements. Practices safety and infection control protocol according to lab and hospital policies to insure a safe environment for patients, visitors, medical staff, and lab personnel. Handles contaminated materials according to infection control guidelines; reports accidents, incidents, and/or unsafe conditions to supervisor; completes incident report within 24 hours. Disposes of contaminated needles in a puncture proof container. Never recap or cut needles. Sorts chart reports for mail as needed. Handles information requests on specimen/test results. Assists with daily functions of secretary, courier, maintaining supplies, training new employees, and other needs. Performs phlebotomy duty after normal business hours and overnight, weekends, and holidays. Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.
