Position Summary
The Department of Medicine, Division of Population Health within the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences seeks a Phlebotomist. In this role as a Phlebotomist, you will serve as a phlebotomist at various community sites under the direction of leadership.
Primary Functions
* Greet and register research participants. Obtain and/or update registration information and referrals or authorizations as necessary.
* Conduct biometric screens at various participant & community locations. Biometric tests may include a fingerstick OR venipuncture blood draw, as well as blood pressure, height, and weight measurements.
* Ensure all supplies and equipment are in working order and provided to participants on day of screen.
* Collect data from research participants and perform data entry duties.
* Be responsible for biometric data being delivered to the Division.
* Schedule clinic appointments and ancillary tests and maintain appropriate scheduling information.
* As part of and in collaboration with the study program staff team, assist in recruitment efforts including completing recruitment calls, conducting eligibility screening, and performing data collection during patient participant initial visit and on-site follow-up visits.
* Act as liaison between community sites and the Division to recruit patients for participation and between study participants and the PI regarding consent forms.
* Compile and maintain research files and related records as part of the program staff team.
* Drive to community sites for specimen collection and specimen drop off
* Ensure compliance/adherence to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and UB's policies, requirements, legal contracts, and HIPAA regulations.
* Demonstrates and provides excellent customer service.
* All other clinical and research related duties as needed.

ConnectLife's Blood Donor Care Specialists (Phlebotomists) are the key to our ability to provide 75% or more of the life-saving blood supply in Western New York's hospitals. Our Phlebotomy teams operate local blood drives in the Western New York and surrounding areas. Preference is given to candidates with phlebotomy certificates or experience.
A Day in-the-Life of a Blood Donor Care Specialist:
How your day starts depends on where you work. We hold blood drives seven days a week throughout Western New York and surrounding areas. It is possible you may travel as far as Bradford, PA for a mobile drive. We also have Neighborhood Blood Donation Centers that have ranging hours of operations and appointment schedules. Blood Donor Care Specialists have an opportunity to make connections with donors that increase repeat donations. Excellent customer service skills are essential to this role.
Employees are required to assist with the set-up and take-down of our drives. Staff are required to lift up to 40lbs. As a Blood Donor Care Specialist, you will screen the donor to determine eligibility for blood donation. This includes donor registration, health history and taking vitals. Once the screening is successfully complete, you will begin the blood donation.
One blood donation can save up to 3 lives in your community!
Full time and Part time available (must complete 4-6 wks of FT training before going PT)

Programs double red cell collection machine and performs troubleshooting as needed during automated collection procedure, addressing alarms appropriately and seeking assistance where needed.
Performs preventative maintenance, machine set-up and daily cleaning of automated collection device. Notifies supervisor if machine service is needed.
Work collaboratively with assigned teams to assure set up will promote effective donor flow through all steps of the donation process, eliminating delays and bottlenecks where possible. Assures any problems or issues are handled discreetly and professionally.
Performs physical assessment to include blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and finger stick for hemoglobin determination. Determines donor suitability based on the findings.
Reviews donor questionnaire or donor history card for completions and reviews donor's medical history as needed in order to determine eligibility to donate. Completes documentation as required.
Explains the blood donation process, answers donor questions, and obtains donor consent for donation. Explains reason for blood donation deferral where appropriate.
Administers care and post-donation care to draw site and provides post-donation instruction to donor. Confirms donor is feeling well after donation and directs/assists donor to refreshment area. Thanks and releases donor when appropriate, asking them to consider donating with ConnectLife again.
Appropriately handles donor adverse reactions as necessary.
For mobile drives, assists in loading of drive supplies and unloading of supplies at drive site. Sets up registration/screening/draw/refreshment areas, taking into consideration traffic patterns and donor flow. Performs break down at the end of drive, assists in loading of drive supplies at drive site and unloading of supplies at the staging site.
Processes blood units as required (i.e., strip, clip) and stores blood in appropriate receptacles. Accounts for all units, tubes, and appropriate paperwork in preparation for scheduled pick-up.
Assists with stocking of mobile drive cases/bus/fixed site workstations as needed to ensure the availability of all materials needed to complete screening and draw of donors.

**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Greets and pleasantly interacts with patients. Verifies patient demographic/insurance information and reviews physician orders. Reconciles issues with patient or physician's office, documents, and updates computer systems. Uses multiple computer systems to complete patient and billing registrations, including conversion of diagnostic verbiage to billing codes, accurate interpretation and entry of tests, as well as generation of accurate labels.
+ Follows patient identification and order verification protocols before collection of the specimen. Performs safe venipuncture, heel or finger sticks and directs the collection of other specimens, such as throat cultures, urine, and stool, following all age-specific and procedural protocols, as well as infection control and safety protocols. Labels all specimens according to protocols.
+ Performs processing of specimens, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and preparation for transport, including computer logging, packaging, and appropriate prioritization actions for specimen integrity.
+ Maintains supplies. Places orders following PAR level guidelines. Receives and rotates stock according to expiration date. Maintains cleanliness and neatness of site. Monitors and maintains equipment, including daily temperature documentation, disinfection, sharps management, and performance of maintenance and inspections. Troubleshoots issues.
+ Answers phone and verbal customer inquiries, providing routine, as well as technical, information. Takes initiative to resolve all customer needs. Participates in all Quality Assurance monitors and initiatives, including data collection and statistics.
+ Performs EKG's following all laboratory and infection control processes.
+ May be reassigned as needed and without prior notice to work at varied locations. Has capability to travel to locations.

**MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE**
+ High School diploma or equivalent and less than 1 year of phlebotomy experience required or

Position Summary

Primary Functions
* Greet and register research participants. Obtain and/or update registration information and referrals or authorizations as necessary.

A Day in-the-Life of a Blood Donor Care Specialist:
How your day starts depends on where you work. We hold blood drives seven days a week throughout Western New York and surrounding areas. It is possible you may travel as far as Bradford, PA for a mobile drive. We also have Neighborhood Blood Donation Centers that have ranging hours of operations and appointment schedules. Blood Donor Care Specialists have an opportunity to make connections with donors that increase repeat donations. Excellent customer service skills are essential to this role.
Employees are required to assist with the set-up and take-down of our drives. Staff are required to lift up to 40lbs. As a Blood Donor Care Specialist, you will screen the donor to determine eligibility for blood donation. This includes donor registration, health history and taking vitals. Once the screening is successfully complete, you will begin the blood donation.
One blood donation can save up to 3 lives in your community!

Assess donor for adequate venipuncture site. Prepares site and performs phlebotomy per ConnectLife SOP in order to ensure aseptic collection and promote donor comfort. Manage multiple donors during phlebotomy.
Programs double red cell collection machine and performs troubleshooting as needed during automated collection procedure, addressing alarms appropriately and seeking assistance where needed.
Performs preventative maintenance, machine set-up and daily cleaning of automated collection device. Notifies supervisor if machine service is needed.
Work collaboratively with assigned teams to assure set up will promote effective donor flow through all steps of the donation process, eliminating delays and bottlenecks where possible. Assures any problems or issues are handled discreetly and professionally.
Performs physical assessment to include blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and finger stick for hemoglobin determination. Determines donor suitability based on the findings.

Administers care and post-donation care to draw site and provides post-donation instruction to donor. Confirms donor is feeling well after donation and directs/assists donor to refreshment area. Thanks and releases donor when appropriate, asking them to consider donating with ConnectLife again.
Appropriately handles donor adverse reactions as necessary.
For mobile drives, assists in loading of drive supplies and unloading of supplies at drive site. Sets up registration/screening/draw/refreshment areas, taking into consideration traffic patterns and donor flow. Performs break down at the end of drive, assists in loading of drive supplies at drive site and unloading of supplies at the staging site.
Processes blood units as required (i.e., strip, clip) and stores blood in appropriate receptacles. Accounts for all units, tubes, and appropriate paperwork in preparation for scheduled pick-up.
