The farm hand is guaranteed to have 40 hours of compensated work from March 1st-November 1st regardless of weather conditions. Relief Milking: The farm hand will work in support of the Organic Dairy team and be trained in WNC's commercial milking operations while working both AM and PM milking shifts.This role requires comfort and experience with large livestock. The importance of safe and calm animal handling, keen observation skills, and the ability to communicate concerns to farm management in real-time cannot be overstated. Thoroughness, conscientiousness, and the ability to move through standard protocols for safe milk handling are a must. Milking experience desired but willing to train an excited candidate. Hay Making: The farm hand will be a working member of the Farm Operations Team and will assist in production of 80 acres of dairy quality hay, tractor operation and hay making. During hay making operations hours may vary depending on the number of consecutive days hay is being produced. The farm hand may be required to work a 4 day work week of 10-12 hour days, and have the rest of the week off. Flexibility to work on some weekend days is desired as haymaking requires unique weather conditions which do not align with traditional business hours. Fenceline Repair: The farm hand will also work on grazing pasture fenceline repair and reclamation. Experience in fence line repair and running steel bladed weedwhackers and hand tools desired. Fenceline repair and improvement will be a focus of this position when hay is not being made, and the farm hand is not working a milking shift.
