Key job responsibilities

A day in the life
As a member of the Delivery Foundation Model team, you'll spend your day on the following:
- Develop and implement novel foundation model architectures, working hands-on with data and our extensive training and evaluation infrastructure

The Delivery Foundation Model team combines ambitious research vision with real-world impact. Our foundation models provide generative reasoning capabilities required to meet the demands of Amazon's global Last Mile delivery network. We leverage Amazon's unparalleled computational infrastructure and extensive datasets to deploy state-of-the-art foundation models to improve the safety, quality, and efficiency of Amazon deliveries. Basic Qualifications

About the Role
We're looking for a ResearchScientist with deep expertise in training and fine-tuning large Vision-Language and Language Models (VLMs / LLMs) for downstream multimodal tasks. You'll help push the next frontier of models that reason across vision, language, and 3D, bridging research breakthroughs with scalable engineering.
What You'll Do
Design and fine-tune large-scale VLMs / LLMs - and hybrid architectures - for tasks such as visual reasoning, retrieval, 3D understanding, and embodied interaction.
Build robust, efficient training and evaluation pipelines (data curation, distributed training, mixed precision, scalable fine-tuning).
Conduct in-depth analysis of model performance: ablations, bias / robustness checks, and generalisation studies.
Collaborate across research, engineering, and 3D / graphics teams to bring models from prototype to production.
Publish impactful research and help establish best practices for multimodal model adaptation.
What You Bring
PhD (or equivalent experience) in Machine Learning, Computer Vision, NLP, Robotics, or Computer Graphics.
Proven track record in fine-tuning or training large-scale VLMs / LLMs for real-world downstream tasks.
Strong engineering mindset - you can design, debug, and scale training systems end-to-end.
Deep understanding of multimodal alignment and representation learning (vision-language fusion, CLIP-style pre-training, retrieval-augmented generation).
Familiarity with recent trends, including video-language and long-context VLMs, spatio-temporal grounding, agentic multimodal reasoning, and Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) fine-tuning.
Awareness of 3D-aware multimodal models - using NeRFs, Gaussian splatting, or differentiable renderers for grounded reasoning and 3D scene understanding.
Hands-on experience with PyTorch / DeepSpeed / Ray and distributed or mixed-precision training.
Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
Bonus / Preferred
Experience integrating 3D and graphics pipelines into training workflows (e.g., mesh or point-cloud encoding, differentiable rendering, 3D VLMs).
Research or implementation experience with vision-language-action models, world-model-style architectures, or multimodal agents that perceive and act.
Familiarity with efficient adaptation methods - LoRA, adapters, QLoRA, parameter-efficient finetuning, and distillation for edge deployment.
Knowledge of video and 4D generation trends, latent diffusion / rectified flow methods, or multimodal retrieval and reasoning pipelines.
Background in GPU optimisation, quantisation, or model compression for real-time inference.
Open-source or publication track record in top-tier ML / CV / NLP venues.

JAX/NYSCF is seeking an Associate ResearchScientist to join the Functional Genomics team as part of the NYSCF Global Stem Cell Array, a robotic system that automates both iPSC derivation, gene editing, and downstream differentiations. The Associate ResearchScientist will contribute to an innovative project centered on phenotyping cardiomyocytes derived from genetically diverse human induced pluripotent stem cell (hi PSC) lines. This work aims to uncover the genetic basis of cardiotoxic responses and to advance predictive models of cardiovascular health through high-throughput functional screening, transcriptomics, and metabolomics.
The project is highly collaborative, involving multidisciplinary teams across several institutions. The primary focus of the work you'll do at JAX/NYSCF is developing automated protocols for the derivation/culture of iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes, drug testing, and sample preparation for downstream analyses, including imaging and single-cell sequencing.
We want candidates with extensive expertise in human pluripotent stem cell culture, directed differentiation into cardiomyocytes, and functional assays. Experience with cell culture automation (including liquid handling systems) or high-throughput assays is a major plus.
This role offers a unique opportunity to work with state-of-the-art screening technologies and automated platforms while contributing to impactful translational research in cardiac safety pharmacology and personalized medicine.
As a Associate ResearchScientist on the Functional Genomics team, you will:
* Design, optimize, and execute experiments to advance a high-throughput iPSC-derived cardiomyocyte platform
* Culture and expand iPSCs, generate iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes, and assess cardiomyocyte quality using automated liquid handling systems
* Apply strong scientific knowledge and analytical skills to monitor, troubleshoot, and refine experimental workflows in real time.
* Independently conduct literature reviews to identify and propose innovative experimental methods, procedures, or technologies
* Contribute to project planning by preparing budgets, timelines, and resource estimates for supplies and equipment
* Lead multiple, concurrent project components, ensuring progress toward research goals
* Evaluate and document results, adapt methodologies as needed, and maintain compliance with regulatory standards
* Communicate research goals and findings effectively, guiding team members and informing collaborators on past and future directions
* Coordinate with external partners to explore new research opportunities
Foster a collaborative environment by sharing expertise and demonstrating openness to learning from others
Minimal requirements
* PhD +3 years of work experience in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.
* Experience with induced pluripotent stem cells or cardiomyocytes/ iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain research findings and methodologies in both written and verbal formats, as well as effectively discuss, troubleshoot, and resolve experimental challenges with team members and collaborators.
* Ability to follow and adapt protocols accurately.
* Excellent documentation and data management practices.
Preferred experience:
* Experience in differentiation of iPSC culture in cardiovascular lineages.
* Exposure to automated cell culture systems (liquid handlers)
* Electrophysiology experience is a plus
* Flow cytometry
