Rust College company history timeline

1868

1868 Institution chartered as Shaw University by the State of Mississippi.

1878

1878 First two college graduates were Robert Q. Adams and Wesley Thomas.

1892

In 1892, to avoid confusion with Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., the institution changed its name to Rust University—a tribute to Rev.

1900

For many years, the most architecturally significant building on the campus was Rust Hall, a beautiful five-story Romanesque Revival building built in 1900 that served as the heart of the college and housed students, the library and classrooms.

1914

1914 The institution placed under the auspices of the Board of Education of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

1915

In 1915, the title was changed to the more realistic name, Rust College.

In 1915 the institution changed its name to Rust University in honor of the Secretary of the Freeman’s Aid Society, Richard S. Rust.

1920

By 1920, the faculty and administration of Rust College, which had been made up largely of white northern Methodists, began to become more diverse, with graduates of Rust College coming back to their alma mater to teach.

1924

Doctor L. M. McCoy (1924), his successor, was the first alumnus to serve his Alma Mater as president.

1950

All other buildings on campus are modern, built after 1950.

1966

1966 Institute for Community Services (ICS) Head start established.

1970

1970 Completed Davage-Smith dormitory, which houses 170 male students and E.L. Rust Hall which houses 196 female students.

1984

1984 Rust College Accreditation reaffirmed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

1992

1992 Erection of Post Office/Student Washerette.

1994

1994 Rust College accreditation reaffirmed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

2004

2004 Rust College accreditation reaffirmed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
