Role Description:
The Senior Safety Specialist - Chemical Process Safety is responsible for managing and supporting process safety programs for Adhesives Research, Inc. chemical manufacturing operations. This role focuses on identifying, evaluating, and mitigating risks associated with hazardous chemicals, reactive processes, and high-energy systems. The position works closely with Engineering, Operations, and EHS leadership to ensure compliance with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements and to promote safe, reliable chemical operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Process Safety Management (PSM)
Help develop and maintain OSHA Process Safety Management (29 CFR 1910.119) programs, as applicable.
Participate in or lead Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), including HAZOPs, What-If analyses, and LOPA studies.
Support Management of Change (MOC) reviews to ensure safety risks are identified and controlled prior to implementation.
Maintain process safety documentation, including:
Process safety information
Operating procedures
Mechanical integrity records
Chemical Hazard & Risk Management
Evaluate risks associated with flammable, toxic, corrosive, and reactive chemicals.
Support safe storage, handling, and transfer of hazardous materials.
Partner with engineering teams on equipment design, safeguards, and interlocks.
Support emergency response planning related to chemical releases, fires, or explosions.
Conduct job hazard analyses (JHAs), ergonomic assessments, and exposure evaluations.
Maintain and continuously improve site safety programs, including:
Hazard communication
PPE and respiratory protection
Ergonomics
Operator/Contractor safety
Industrial Hygiene
Training & Culture
Develop and deliver process safety and chemical hazard training for operations, maintenance, and engineering personnel.
Promote a strong process safety culture focused on hazard awareness and risk ownership.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Collaborate with Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, and Environmental teams on capital projects, process changes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Serve as a technical subject matter expert for process safety and chemical hazard management.
Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Safety Engineering, or a related technical field.
5+ years of experience in chemical manufacturing or processing environments.
Strong working knowledge of OSHA PSM, chemical hazard evaluation, and risk management.
Experience participating in or leading PHAs and MOC processes.
Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
Preferred:
Experience with high-hazard chemical operations (flammables, corrosives, toxics, pressure systems).
Experience supporting capital projects and startup safety reviews.
Professional certifications such as CHMM, ASP, CSP, or CCPSC.
Completion of relevant occupational safety training: HAZWOPER (29 CFR 1910.120), OSHA 30-Hour General Industry, Adult First AID/CPR AED, etc.
Experience with electronic EHS risk management software- PHA Pro, Gensuite, EHS Insight

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
BS Engineering, Safety, or Industrial Hygiene related discipline and/or combination or experience and education.
Minimum of 5 years' experience in EH&S, in manufacturing and/or related construction industry that is subject to OSHA and various environmental regulatory compliance.
Certification in EH&S (e.g., OSHA 30-hour, Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or similar) preferred.
Demonstrated leadership capabilities and influence across an organization.
Knowledge of local, state or federal environmental, health and safety regulations and how to access resources (e.g., OSHA, EPA, L&I, regulatory agencies, consulting firms, web-based information) and evaluate resources applicable to facilities.
Proven ability to develop and deliver EH&S training programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Consult with local regulatory agencies on local environmental quality standards, industrial practices, and new developments to ensure proper permitting and practices are followed.
Risk Management:

Training & Development:

Incident Investigation & Reporting:

* Ensures that each subsidiary's Safety Manual ("Manual"), and safety policies and procedures, are followed by subsidiary plant personnel in compliance with the Manual and local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules, regulations and programs
* Reviews each subsidiary's safety training requirements and makes recommendations while balancing OSHA compliance with Company training goals
* Works with local subsidiary personnel and resources to determine safety training needs and conducts necessary training or coordinates with external resources to provide training
* Ensures proper tracking at subsidiary of all training that is conducted and ensures any required renewals are completed in a timely manner
* Inspects subsidiary facilities and equipment to evaluate compliance with Safety Manuals and Policies and Procedures; uncovers/detects existing or potential accident and health hazards; recommends corrective or preventative actions where needed. Communicates with subsidiary management and employees regarding compliance and proactive measures; recommends ways to reduce or eliminate the hazards
* Compiles and submits to Subsidiary Management and to the Executive Team safety reports as required to maintain compliance with Company guidelines and local, state, or federal regulations
* Performs analysis of accidents, incidents, near misses and illnesses to determine the cause of the injury or illness and develops accident prevention programs to promote safe work practices and reduce associated Workers Compensation expenses
* Review accident trends and near miss reporting to identify necessary process improvements needed to ensure safe, compliant, efficient, and profitable operations
* Act as a resource to research specific compliance and regulatory issues in support of business units
* Develops and maintains timely and effective communication across subsidiaries including but not limited to accident/incident reviews, safety best practice bulletins, audit findings, etc.
* Works with subsidiary personnel to develop and implement a broader new employee safety onboarding process
Qualifications/Requirements:
* Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Occupational Health & Safety or related field required
* Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification preferred

SMS provides a comprehensive range of services for steel mill customers. Our range of services includes, but is not limited scrap yard management, finished or semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics/transportation support, and slag processing.
This position will report to the Regional Safety Manager.
Duties
Implement and maintain policies and procedures in accordance with EPA regulations, OSHA standards, and corporate initiatives.
Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure compliance with environmental and OSHA laws and regulations.
Respond to onsite accidents/incidents/injuries.
Complete incident reports related to occupational health and safety, providing actionable recommendations for improvement.
Collaborate with various departments to fabricate solutions for EHS.
Provide training on EHS practices to new employees to ensure a safe workplace.
Serve as the primary EHS point of contact for the site.
Lead and coordinate the continuous improvement of the site's environmental, safety, and health performance, including collaborating and providing leadership to establish develop and maintain the company's programs/policies in line with corporate core values, in which Safety is number 1 and a key priority.
Identify and anticipate EHS concerns and hazards by surveying environmental, operational, and occupational conditions; rendering opinions on new equipment and procedures; investigating violations recommending preventive programs.
Guide and promote safe work performance by developing safety systems, polices, and procedures; developing safety campaigns, communications, and recognitions; training managers, employees, and new hires. Training can consist of daily, weekly, monthly, and annual training requirements. Must maintain an accurate recordkeeping of training being conducted.
Compliance with all EHS standards for federal, state and local safety regulations by studying and interpreting standards; enforcing adherence to regulations; advising management on needed actions.
Enforce safety policies by conducting inspections; observations, audits, walkthroughs, reporting statistics; counseling managers and employees.
Coordinate and lead EHS matter and communications, including communications with enforcement agencies, the host mill site, and related reporting requirements.
Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including Environmental, Safety and Health guidelines and best practices, including mitigating risks associated with contractors and vendor through pre-job checklist, training, and oversight of work being conducted.
Comply with cost savings initiatives, identify, and recognize ways to reduce costs and enhance revenue, including treating any company expenses the same as you would if it was your own money.
Maintain par stock level of necessary PPE to the specific requirements of the host mill and SMS. Audit, track, order, and maintain responsibility for PPE levels through BMP and digital portal Coupa for ordering/receiving.
Document, update, and maintain the site for any EHS incident in digital portal Benchmark ESG for all property damage, near miss, unsafe act/condition, observations, ATS, corrective actions, and compliance calendar.
Immediately be able to investigate injuries, property damage, and near misses. Identify root cause and put corrective actions into place, communicate to the site team and train to the standard.
Be able to certify for first aid, CPR, and AED to respond and provide care to injured teammates, escort to clinic/emergency room, and to manage the situation while working with medical providers.
Maintain documentation of the company's safety procedures, accidents and related events in Benchmark and paper files.
Function as part of the management team and align with core values, safety policy, and six safety steps to success to meet company policies and goals, escalating and reporting issues that require further assistance as appropriate.
Plan, participate and actively contribute to internal and external business meetings as necessary and appropriate.
Complete and track progress on environmental annual reporting with third party consultants such as Tier II and annual emissions report, etc. Also maintain compliance of daily, weekly, monthly, and annual environmental requirements such as SPCC and SWPPP.
Experience
2-5 years' experience in EHS field.
