South Texas Primary Care company history timeline
The hospital building that stood for decades and had been renamed multiple times was finally demolished in 1993 to make room for the new McAllen City Hall.
The hospital operated as a governmental, non profit, Hospital Authority until it was sold to Universal Health Services, Inc. in November 1994.
McAllen Heart Hospital opened on January 15, 1996 as a specialty care facility dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.
As part of its commitment to the community, Universal Health Services, Inc. began construction in July 1996 on the fourth generation hospital in the community.
On August 1, 1997, Edinburg Regional Medical Center opened its doors to care for the residents of the community.
McAllen Heart Hospital was purchased from MedCath Corporation in January 2001 by Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS), and it continues to operate as specialty hospital focused on cardiac care.
Along with another Sister and a postulant, she established Laredo’s first hospital, a 12-bed facility, which Mercy managed until 2003.
Opened our newest health center on Marbach Road in 2005.
Cornerstone Regional Hospital, co-owned by physician investors, became part of South Texas Health System in 2005.
With expansions and access to care on the rise, South Texas Behavioral Health Center relocated from McAllen and opened a new replacement facility in June 2006 to service behavioral health patients of the Rio Grande Valley.
In 2010, The Planned Parenthood Trust of San Antonio and South Central Texas consolidates with its sister affiliate, the Planned Parenthood Association of Cameron and Willacy Counties.
In 2011, The Planned Parenthood Trust of San Antonio and South Central Texas changes its name to the Planned Parenthood Trust of South Texas to reflect its new geographic scope.
On January 1, 2014 the Planned Parenthood Trust of South Texas changes its name is Planned Parenthood South Texas.
In the summer of 2015, PPST opens a surgery center in the heart of the South Texas Medical Center in San Antonio.
In 2019, South Texas Veterans Health Care System completed more than 1.8. million outpatient visits.
