- Develop engineering conclusions for data analysis.
- Determine the permitting requirements for the particular type of work being designed for the location in which it is to be constructed. Involved in the permitting process of projects, which may require meetings with clients, contractors, reviewing agency personnel and governing entities.
- Assist in determining schedule and budget requirements.
- Interact directly with clients to gather information and discuss project requirements.
- Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications.
- Assign tasks to and coordinates work of project technical team.
- Lead project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, sub-contractors, and vendors.

We are seeking a forward-thinking ML/AI Engineer with a strong foundation in AI and a growing specialization in agentic AI, including both single-agent and multi-agent systems. This role will support our expanding portfolio of AI-driven solutions in the water sector, contributing to a range of projects that involve complex systems, data-driven decision-making, and intelligent automation.
You will collaborate with a cross-functional team of data scientists, engineers, and domain experts to design, prototype, and deploy agentic AI solutions that enhance operational efficiency, system adaptability, and innovation across diverse water-related challenges. You will report to an Innovation Portfolio Manager in Stantec Water BOU's Office of Research, Innovation and Technology.
Key Responsibilities
* Design and implement agentic AI systems, including single-agent and multi-agent architectures, for applications in water infrastructure, forecasting, optimizations, and operations.
* Collaborate with ML/AI leads to integrate LLMs and autonomous agents into existing and new solution pipelines.
* Contribute to the development of exploratory prototypes and production-ready tools that leverage agentic reasoning, planning, and collaboration.
* Support the MLOps lifecycle, including model tracking (e.g., MLflow), deployment, and monitoring within Azure DevOps and Databricks environments.
* Translate domain-specific challenges into scalable AI solutions, working closely with water engineers and project teams.
* Stay current with emerging research and tools in Machine Learning, agentic AI, reinforcement learning, and multi-agent systems.
* Document methodologies, share learnings, and contribute to internal knowledge bases and Communities of Practice.
Qualifications
* Master's+ degree in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
* 5+ years total professional experience, 1+ of hands-on experience in machine learning and AI development, with exposure to agentic AI concepts (e.g., autonomous agents, multi-agent coordination, LLM-based agents).
* Familiarity with LLM frameworks (e.g., LangChain, AutoGen, OpenAI APIs) and multi-agent orchestration tools. Hands-on experience building AI agents with LLMs, including RAG, using these frameworks is preferred.
* Strong programming skills with Python, PyTorch or TensorFlow, and cloud-based ML platforms (preferably Azure). Skills in multiple languages (e.g., Java, Node.js) is a benefit.
* Understanding of MLOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, model versioning, and monitoring.
* Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
* Experience or interest in water systems, environmental modeling, or Microsoft Azure SDKs such as AI Foundry is a plus.

Your Key Responsibilities
DO: Project Delivery
* Serve as Project Technical Lead and Engineer of Record for water infrastructure projects with responsibility for reviewing and sealing of projects
* Provide technical leadership for projects in the US Northeast and occasionally for projects in other parts of the country, performing a variety of tasks to plan, execute and deliver the completed project

Your Responsibilities as Civil CAD Technologist:
* Transform preliminary concepts and sketches into engineering designs and drawings using primarily AutoCAD Civil 3D, as well as other technical software as needed
* Processing the topographic data (from LiDAR, satellite, sonar, ground surveys, etc.) for use on the projects
* Providing civil design and drafting support for utility and industrial facilities and services, including buried and overland piping, pumping stations, water, sanitation, stormwater management, roadway design, site grading and drainage systems, and spill containment systems Coordinate with other team members to ensure schedules, budgets and quality control standards are achieved.

As a Mechanical Engineer, your role in our professional consulting services team is to work independently on multidisciplinary projects of various complexity as a discipline leader, through all phases of a project lifecycle. * Develop Plumbing calculations including domestic water, sanitary waste, and storm water systems sizing.
* Apply design codes and standards based on the project needs.
* Coordinate design with other design disciplines throughout the life of a project.
* Assist with mentoring engineers in training (EIT) to develop and strengthen their skills and technical abilities.
* Travel to job sites in your state of residence and other states (5%)
Your Capabilities and Credentials
* In-depth understanding of HVAC engineering fundamentals such as psychrometric chart, refrigeration cycle and heat transfer.
* Experience in designing HVAC and Plumbing systems. Fire Protection design is a plus.
* Strong familiarity with design codes and standards of practice.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong understanding of all phases of project deliverables.
* Ability to lead one or more projects simultaneously.
* Experience with HVAC load calculation software - HAP or Trace.
* Strong knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience in designing HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection systems for water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, chemical storage rooms, and hydroelectric power plants.
* Familiarity with NFPA 820 requirements for HVAC systems serving wastewater treatment plants.
* Strong client presentation skills.
Education and Experience
* Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
* Licensed Professional Engineer (PE). NCEES record ready to obtain Professional Engineering licensure.
* Minimum of 7 years of experience
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

As a Process Engineer your role is to focus on the planning, design, operation, control, optimization, and intensification of chemical, physical/mechanical, and biological processes for complex water/wastewater treatment facilities and pumping stations. They develop and modify process formulations, methods, and controls to meet quality standards and recommend and implement improvements, modifications, or additions to document work.
A Process Engineer approves and prepares proposals and cost estimates and evaluates all project progress and recommends changes. Represents project work in client meetings and continues to cultivate relationships with client organizations. May provide work leadership and training to more junior professional and technical staff and provides technical guidance to less experienced professionals or technicians assigned to work on a common project. Intermittently, investigates and advises on unusual and difficult problems encountered in the process engineering practice. Uses and applies advanced engineering principles and has a working knowledge of advanced technical research. Plans, conducts and coordinates engineering assignments, involving several smaller and some higher revenue projects, of varying complexity.
Project types will be planning, design, and construction phase services for water and wastewater treatment, odor and corrosion control, and nutrient recovery.
Your Key Responsibilities
* Perform more advanced engineering planning and design tasks on assigned projects under minimal supervision, including engineering drawings, engineering reports, presentations, and required applications to regulatory and/or funding agencies.
* Develop project scope, budgets, and design approach for small size projects, and support marketing and business development professionals in positioning for potential projects, writing technical portions of proposals, participating in client interviews and supporting negotiations for project contracts.
* Collaborate with stakeholders in client project requirement meetings, coordination meetings with internal and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, sub-contractors, and vendors in preparation and coordination of project specifications.
* Lead project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, sub-contractors, and vendors.
* Perform on technically complex projects and may act as a technical resource to other team members.
* Apply advanced knowledge of current principles and practices of process engineering and keeps informed of new methods and developments.
* Apply knowledge and expertise acquired through progressive experience to resolve complex issues where precedent may be limited.
* Assist and/or lead the development of proposals and contract negotiation.
* Contribute to the development of new standards and specifications of process design.
* May supervise the work of other project resources, including setting the project budget and their schedules for completing the work in conjunction with Project Manager(s).
* Engineer of record on own work product, work of non-licensed engineers and technologist.
Education and Experience
* Education: Bachelor's degree with an emphasis on Civil, Environmental, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering required
* Experience: Minimum of 5 years of related experience preferred
* Licensure/Certification: Licensed Professional Engineer is required
