A web search got numerous references to the same factoid about Superior Machine Tool Co. inventing/developing/manufacturing the first (or first American) Howitzer shell in 1918.
A patent search from 1920 onwards did not uncover any patents assigned to this maker.
Superior Surgical Manufacturing Company was founded in 1920 as a family business that initially focused on manufacturing and distributing apparel products for hospitals and other institutions within the healthcare industry.
Superior Aluminum Products was incorporated on July 11th, 1956 in Youngstown, Ohio, by original partners Lou Burt and Lou Hermann.
Intense competition in the aluminum window market caused the duo to begin manufacturing aluminum railings in 1960.
After the death of Lou Hermann, Superior Aluminum was purchased by west-central Ohio businessmen Tom Francis and Ed Borchers on November 12th, 1966.
In March of 1967, the company was moved to Russia, Ohio (pronounced ROO-shee), operating in a 15,000 square foot building formerly occupied by Francis Products, Inc.

December 1972 saw Tom Francis and Ed Borchers receive acceptance of their patent for Series 900 heavy duty aluminum railing, still the foundation for the popular Series 9000 (9P) aluminum railing line.
In December of 1985, as a result of the company’s continued growth, the move into a bigger manufacturing facility was made.
Earnings rose steadily until a slight slowdown occurred in 1986, but the company experienced an upswing after issuing an innovative sales catalogue and following a licensing agreement with Disney.
