An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all have some things in common: an environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.
Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian at Waterville Veterinary Clinic to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE to view list of stipend amounts and HERE for details on the stipend program. The stipend amount for Waterville Veterinary Clinic is $1,000.

Vibrant Emotional Health
Mental Health Internship Program
Fall 2026-Spring 2027
For more than 55 years, Vibrant Emotional Health has been at the forefront of transforming mental health care in the United States. What began as a small initiative in New York City has grown into one of the nation's most trusted and innovative behavioral health organizations, reaching millions of people each year through a diverse portfolio of crisis intervention, community-based mental health programs, and peer-driven services.
Vibrant is widely recognized as a national leader in crisis response. We are the administrator of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and deliver cutting-edge mental health solutions that ensure people receive immediate, life-saving support whenever and wherever they need it. Our expertise in behavioral health innovation has positioned us as a key partner to federal, state, and local governments, as well as leading health organizations, who rely on us to develop and implement high-impact programs that strengthen mental health care nationwide.
Beyond crisis intervention, we have spent decades building deep trust within communities by delivering accessible, culturally responsive, and evidence-based mental health services for youth, families, and older adults. We have consistently led the way in creating compassionate, community-centered solutions for individuals facing complex mental health challenges. Vibrant has earned the trust of communities, policymakers, and healthcare leaders alike-not just by delivering services, but by reimagining what mental health support can be. With every program we build, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that all people, regardless of their circumstances, have access to the care they need to thrive.
Internship Overview:
Vibrant Emotional Health is offering a year-long mental health counseling internship program for up to 8 Masters level Interns from Mental Health Counseling and Social Work programs. The interns will be placed for 5-month rotations within our Adolescent Skills Centers, Family Youth and Peer Support Services, and optional 2-month rotations through Direct Service Community Based teams. The overall clinical focus of our internship is to integrate clinical supports in community based, peer friendly programs. Clinical interns will learn to work holistically with families dealing with mental health challenges. Interns will be placed at one of our Adolescent Skills Center sites to learn unique approaches to educational and vocational supports for youth between the ages of 16-22, who are looking to get additional training and education to accomplish their own goals. Interns will rotate to our Family Youth Peer Support programs, where the focus is empowering families and caregivers of these children to better understand mental health systems and concurrent supports available. The focus of this rotation is to support families dealing with the difficulties inherent in advocating for services for their youth across a variety of clinical presentations. All interns are also eligible for optional 2-month rotations with Direct service teams, a Child and Family Treatment Support Service, and a Child and Adolescent Care Coordination Team. These programs provide direct therapeutic services in the community, where interns will shadow services with families and learn about diagnosis and development of interventions for families in the community.
The internship program is based on a 16-20 hour week at minimum. Individual supervision, group supervision, and didactics will be offered on a weekly basis by the shared faculty present at all sites and additional colleagues representative of the wide array of programs offered at Vibrant. The internship will begin in September and will end by August.
