Tougaloo College company history timeline

1869

The founding of Tougaloo College in 1869 is celebrated on this date.

In 1869, the American Missionary Association of New York purchased 500 acres (202 ha) of one of the largest former plantations in central Mississippi to build a college for freedmen and their children, recently freed slaves.

1871

In 1871, the Mississippi State Legislature granted the new institution a formal charter under the name of Tougaloo University.

1873

In 1873, Tougaloo University added a theological department for students intending on entering the Christian ministry and expanded its industrial department, adding a cotton gin, apparatus for grinding corn, and developing capacity for the manufacture of simple furniture on site.

1897

College credit first became available in 1897, but qualifying for accreditation by the Southern Association took a number of years to achieve.

1954

Similarly, the Southern Christian Institute would merge with Tougaloo in 1954.

1962

The new school was called the Tougaloo Southern Christian College, but in 1962 was once again renamed Tougaloo College.

2019

In 2019, the College welcomed its fourteenth president and second female to the distinguished list of leaders who have served.
