Donahue commenced his career after he graduated from the University of Southern California (Class of 1985) with a BS Degree in Real Estate Finance.
In 1988 Publicis S.A., an international advertising agency with offices in 19 countries and more than 100 subsidiaries, entered into a global alliance with FCB. Under the terms of the agreement, Publicis would represent clients in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
By 1993 Publicis had decided it needed more of a presence in North America.
True North was founded in 1993.
In December 1994 the formation of True North was announced, and True North became FCB's parent company.
According to True North's 1996 annual report, "All of our outstanding disputes [with Publicis] have been resolved." True North increased its ownership in Publicis to 26.5 percent and saw itself as a partner helping Publicis expand globally from its European base.
Reorganized into Three Operating Units, 1996
In 1996 True North was organized into three groups: 1) Foote, Cone & Belding (FCB), 2) TN Technologies, and 3) Associated Communications Companies.
At the end of 1996, chairman and CEO Bruce Mason was able to confidently state, "True North is in the strongest competitive position in its history." The company reported net income of $27.8 million on revenue of $493.1 million and had $8.2 billion in capitalized billings.
Within FCB, a new, fully owned and controlled network in Europe was formed. It included the Wilkens International network, acquired in January 1997, and four large FCB operations.
Publicis Failed in Its Hostile Takeover Attempt in 1997
Through Walt’s leadership, True North Companies – founded in 1997 – has expanded its real estate footprint across education, mixed-use, multifamily, retail, hospitality, and office market segments.
True North Energy was founded in 1999, through a 50/50 partnership between The Lyden Family and Shell Oil Us.
In 2000, True North became India’s first private equity fund to raise capital from the domestic market.
Wendt took up other responsibilities, and though he and Impala remained as investors, the new company developed a strong local identity, and was reborn as TRUE NORTH in 2004.
Inc. before joining True North Companies in 2006 as Chief Estimator.
With its new identity in 2016, True North will continue the company’s journey in transforming businesses.
In 2020, Donahue was asked to assist in the sales and recapitalization of buildings leased to the United States Federal Government.
Ashley joined True North in 2021 and handles the administrative functions for the True North team, supporting business development, systems management, client relationships, and office management.
