2000

In 2000, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Immunologists.

A new century of pediatric care dawned in 2000 with the opening of the five-story Children’s Harbor Center, located on the corner of 6th Avenue South and 16th Street.The building houses the Children’s Center for Research and Innovation and Children’s Family Center.

Pediatric Hospital Medicine began in 2000 as a service available to private practice pediatricians on a voluntary basis.

By the year 2000, three more faculty members were recruited - Doctor Kenneth McCormick as Division Director and Drs.

2001

In the US News and World Report of 2001, the department ranked 19th among all pediatric training programs.

2002

The interest in global health was expanded in 2002 by establishing an exchange of residents between the department of pediatrics’ program and the Catholic University in Santiago, Chile.

2003

In 2003 Doctor Robillard began the recruitment process for a new Director of Pediatric Pulmonology.

In 2003, the current hospital, University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital opened.

By 2003, the faculty had grown to 97 members, including 38 women.

2004

Doctor J.R. Hartig became the director of the combined training program in 2004.

George McCracken received the Maxwell Finland Award from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (2004). George Lister received the Maureen Andrew Mentor Award of the Society for Pediatric Research (2004).

2007

August 2007 marked the opening of the American Family Children’s Hospital (AFCH), a free-standing, state-of-the-art facility designed around the needs of children and their families.

In 2007, after more than 20 years of leadership, he announced his retirement.

The Cunningham Scholarship was established in 2007 to honor Doctor Cunningham, the former Director of the Division of Endocrinology and Pediatric Clerkship Director.

Fangming Lin was the first recipient of the Norman Siegel Pediatric Research Grant Award from the American Society of Nephrology and the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (2007).

2008

After several years of deferral, the connecting bridge from Children’s Hospital to UAB Medical Center was completed in 2008.

In 2008, Children’s announced the $100 Million “Keeping Promises” capital campaign for a 750,000 square foot expansion of the hospital.

2009

The campaign concluded in 2009, two years earlier than expected, raising more than $110 million.

2010

With the opening of the Women and Infant Center (WIC) in 2010, the Division on Neonatology finally moved to new space with a capacity for 124 neonates.

2011

In 2011, Children’s Hospital celebrated a century of pediatric care and service to children.

2012

In August of 2012, the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children opened its doors.

The Division of Neonatology has grown significantly, from 6 faculty in 2012 to 25 faculty now.

In 2012, this program was expanded to the Universidad del Desarrollo/Clinica Alemana with an additional two residents participating in the exchange.

2013

His announcement in September 2013 was endorsed by the leadership of UAB, HSF and Children’s of Alabama with the commitment to engage a recruiting firm to conduct a national search, a process expected to last one year.

In 2013, the division was selected as one of 7 institutions to join North America’s only pediatric cancer “Dream Team,” to collaboratively advance the study of immunotherapy and accelerate development of new cancer therapies.

2013- Doctor Stagno Announces Retirement After the search for a new dean at the Medical School came to a successful completion with the appointment of Doctor Selwyn Vickers, Doctor Stagno, after 25 years of service, decided to step down.

2014

Additionally, the Department established its first UM owned and operated multispecialty pediatric clinics in 2014 at the University’s new Northville Ambulatory site.

By 2014 the Department of Pediatrics had become the second largest and one of significant prominence within the Medical School and University of Michigan Health System.

In 2014 a new Level IV NICU opened at AFCH. The unit, which recently expanded from 14 to 26 beds, provides state-of-the-art care for some of our sickest and most vulnerable patients.

As Doctor Stagno stepped down at the end of fiscal year 2014 the department financial statement indicated a total income of $99.4 million with $17.7 million generated by research and $58.3 million from clinical revenue.

2015

In 2015, Doctor Erin Swanson-Kimani joined the division after completing a combined residency in general pediatrics and physical medicine and rehabilitation at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

2016

UT Southwestern established its first combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics (Med/Peds) clinical practice and residency program in 2016.

Lori A. Karol served as the first female President of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) (2016).

2017

Professors instrumental in launching the Rees-Jones Center for Foster Care at Children’s Health include Anu Partap, Heidi Roman and Jaclyn Albin (2017).

2018

As of 2018, the number of endowed chairs has increased to 23 with seven chairs residing at UAB and 16 residing at Children’s Hospital.

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) awarded more than $37 million 2018 for cancer research and prevention, including more than $5 million to create a Pediatric Cancer Data Core and $12 million to recruit cancer investigators.

2019

The pediatric cardiology and heart surgery program at AFCH was ranked among the top 50 specialties in children’s hospitals throughout the country by United States News and World Report in 2019.

Angela Mihalic received the 2019 Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation’s Piper Professor Award recognizing outstanding college professors across Texas.

2020

In 2020, UT Southwestern and Children’s HealthSM opened their first joint pediatric enterprise at the Reimagine RedBird development serving southern Dallas.
