Voorhees College company history timeline

1897

Founded in 1897 by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright-Menafee, who was barely older than some of today’s students, Voorhees College has a rich history and a bright future.

1902

In 1902, Ralph Voorhees, a New Jersey philanthropist, gave the school a donation to purchase land and construct buildings.

1904

In 1904 the South Carolina General Assembly renamed the school and incorporated it as the Voorhees Industrial Institute for Colored Youths.

1924

In 1924 the American Church Institute for Negroes, which is an affiliate of the Episcopal Church, began to support the school, beginning a relationship that lasts to this day.

In 1924, the school was affiliated with the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina.

1929

Voorhees offered its first post-secondary instruction in 1929, the same year it changed its name to Voorhees Normal and Industrial School.

1969

In 1969, the school's predominantly Black student body demanded more Black study programs and the hiring of Black faculty, as well as outreach to assist the local lower income community of Denmark with scholarships.

1994

Additionally, he is Founder and Senior Artistic Director for NGOMA African Cultural Performance Troupe, founded in 1994 at Norfolk State University and continued to present.

1997

Doctor Hopkins is the author of Educating Black Males: Critical Issues in Schooling, Community and Power (State University of New York Press: Albany, 1997) among other scholarly journal articles.
