The Alaska Psychiatric Institute (API) is recruiting for a Psychiatric Nurse 1/2 What You Will Be Doing: As a Psychiatric Nurse 1/2 you will be providing skilled nursing care to patients; individualized patient assessment and care; participates in therapeutic activities as facilitator, or co-facilitator. You will administer medications to patients and provide education including expected outcomes, possible side effects, and any food/drug interactions. You will transcribe all orders, recording this information in each patient's Medication Administration Record (MAR) and chart regarding patient behavior and responses to medication treatment. Job requires complete nursing assessments on newly admitted patients, patients on close observation special status, or patients that may require emergency seclusion or restraint. You will also determine and prioritize individual nursing needs, give direction to Office Assistant 1s and Psychiatric Nursing Assistants 1/2/3 including work assignments and monitoring those assignments for both completion and accuracy.

Psychiatric Nurse 1:

Psychiatric Nurse 2:

Successful completion of a formal training plan as a Psychiatric Nurse 1 with the State of Alaska;

One year of entry level experience as a Registered Nurse. Examples of this experience include but are not exclusively limited to prior service as a Psychiatric Nurse 1, Corrections Nurse 1, or Nurse 1 with the State of Alaska or its equivalent with another employer.
Substitution:
Combinations of prior training and experience in other specializations of nursing care (e.g., Med-Surg, Corrections, Public Health, Critical Care) will be evaluated for comparability on a case-by-case basis.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Participants will not be performing wildland or structural firefighting activities.
As a NPS Structural Fire Protection Individual Placement, you may be responsible for the following duties, which can vary by park location:
Perform annual fire and life safety building inspections.
Develop or update evacuation plans for park buildings.
Assist with the development of inspection, testing, and maintenance plans for fire protection systems.
Conduct training classes on portable fire extinguishers.
Perform monthly portable fire extinguisher checks and establish a tracking program for extinguishers throughout parks.
Establish a fire hydrant inspection and flow test program.
Establish a hot work permit program.
Revise a park's structural fire management plan (SFMP).
Assess the fire protection of a historic building and make recommendations for protecting the building from structure fire better in the future.
Review plans for new construction and provide feedback to the Regional Structural Fire Marshal (RSFM).

You will serve as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the Nursing Service Line for the Anchorage VA Medical Center with duty in Juneau, Alaska. Recruitment/Relocation Incentive may be authorized for highly qualified candidate. Develop and maintain communication with patients, interdisciplinary teams, VA medical centers, and other agencies.
Checking vitals, process reminders, reviewing and processing alerts, and administering medications as needed.
Participate in team huddles and meetings to manage and plan patient care.
Adjust the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs.
Work with the team to reinforce the plan of care and self-help solutions and enter appropriate information into the electronic record.
Monitoring pre-appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient visit/procedure (e.g., X-ray, lab work.
Provide input in problem solving on operational issues or procedures.
Participate in and independently follow up on team huddles by sharing information and collaborating with the medical team to assure continuity of care.
Evaluate patient information and clinic schedule lists to determine whether patient is vested.
Educate providers about shared patients (those who receive their care at multiple VAs or those who have care in the community) and bring to the attention of the provider.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM PDT.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year).

Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. This position involves considerable amount of standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), stooping, sitting, bending, reaching, lifting, turning, pulling, and pushing. It requires visual acuity, keen hearing (at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care clear distinctive speech), and manual dexterity. The Licensed Practical Nurse works with Veterans and their families during times of emergent and non-emergent times. Some primary roles in this capacity: assist providers with clinic visits, exams, and procedures; administer medication, process clinical reminders, review and process alerts; provide education within scope of practice; keep Veteran informed during visit and provide needed updates, assist with walk-in patients as schedule allows; daily cleaning and stocking of rooms; review secure messages, FAXCOM, and CMT tasks; provide SBAR communication; and assist in scrubbing the schedule. This LPN position has the potential to cross- train to other departments in the VA to help better fulfill the mission of caring for our Veterans, and to be able to fill in for other departments during times of absences and low staffing as indicated by their supervisor/management.
Work Conditions: A Licensed Practical Nurse works in a primary care Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) setting primarily works in an outpatient, office clinic environment, caring for a range of veterans by performing direct patient care, medication administration, and clinical support for providers.
