Research Scientist - Computational Chemistry
Monarch 4.4
Oakland, CA jobs
Monarch is seeking a Computational Chemist to lead our molecular modeling efforts to predict how insects respond to olfactory stimuli. Reporting directly to the Chief Technology Officer, your work will be critical in validating the efficacy of machine-learning-predicted compounds across multiple insect species.
Key Responsibilities
•Develop and apply computational models to predict the molecular interactions between compounds and olfactory receptors
•Conduct quantum mechanical calculations, molecular docking, and dynamics simulations to refine predictions
•Analyze data from computational experiments to prioritize compounds for lab and field validation
Location
This is a full-time, on-site position based in Oakland, CA.
Why Join Monarch?
Building an alternative to insecticides is one of the most important technical challenges of our time. Monarch is developing a product that works-a spatial repellent that protects crops from insects, humans from toxins, and insects from needless harm. If that mission motivates you, consider applying.
*************************
Qualifications
•PhD (or Master's degree + 7 years industrial experience) in biophysics, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, or equivalent, with a computational emphasis
•Skilled in scientific programming (e.g. Python), data analytics, and reporting (experience with Pandas, NumPy, Jupyter).
•Proficiency in advanced molecular modeling techniques and associated software (skilled in docking, molecular dynamics simulations, rational design or ligand design). Experience with psi4, MDAnalysis, FreeSASA, AutoDock Vina, AutoDock 4.
•Familiarity with cheminformatics tools (Open Babel, RDKit) and basic machine learning/AI applications in computational chemistry, including protein structure prediction (AlphaFold or similar)
•Strong work ethic
•Ability to work in a creative, fast-paced environment: prototyping ideas, iteratively optimizing them, and multi-tasking.
About Monarch
Building an alternative to insecticides is one of the most important technical challenges of our time. Most fruits and vegetables are sprayed with insecticides, including organics. The top three sprayed on these crops are toxic to the human nervous system. An estimated 35 quadrillion animals are killed yearly because of their use. And farmers lose tens of billions of dollars a year because insecticides often fail at their basic job: preventing insects from destroying crops. Monarch is developing a product that works-a spatial repellent that protects crops from insects, humans from toxins, and insects from needless harm. It will work by preventing insects from landing on crops in the first place. We're building a genomic, molecular, and behavioral dataset from the ground up. Then applying computational chemistry and machine learning tools to predict which of the billions of potential compounds in nature trigger a ‘fly away' signal from the olfactory neurons in the antennae to the smell center in the animal's brain. From that unexplored data space, we'll create the most effective products to protect crops and our long-term health.

The Grainger Bioinformatics Center of the Collections, Conservation, and Research Division at the Field Museum is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Research Associate for a full-time, two-year term position, with the possibility of extension.
This privately funded (non-government) position focuses on advancing research in the comparative genomics and population genomics/phylogenomics of lichen symbioses, particularly involving non-model organisms and complex symbiotic systems.
Project Scope
This position offers an exciting opportunity to explore evolutionary diversification, population structure, and genomic adaptation in lichens, with an emphasis on fungal symbionts and their interactions with algal and bacterial partners. The research leverages whole-genome sequencing, target enrichment, and RADseq to investigate co-evolution, genomic convergence, and ecological specialization across taxonomic and geographic scales.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Analyze genomic datasets, including assembly, annotation, and comparative analysis of symbiont genomes.
Develop and apply workflows for phylogenomic inference, population structure analysis, and species delimitation.
Collaborate on sequencing, data integration, and interpretation of multi-omic datasets.
Contribute to manuscript writing, presentations, and broader dissemination of research outcomes.
Participate in mentoring and training undergraduate students, particularly those from underrepresented groups in STEM fields.
Mentorship and Expectations:
The position includes support and career development under a formal Postdoctoral Mentoring Plan.
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to publish at least one lead-author manuscript per year and to contribute to collaborative publications.
The position is based at The Field Museum in Chicago, and active on-site participation is expected.
Qualifications:
PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, evolutionary biology, or a related discipline.
Proven experience in genomic data analysis, especially in comparative or population genomics.
Proficiency in one or more scripting languages (e.g., Python, R, Perl, Bash).
Familiarity with standard bioinformatics pipelines for sequence analysis, genome assembly, and variant analysis.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with RADseq, target enrichment, or metagenomic sequencing approaches.
Background in fungal biology, lichenology, or symbiotic systems.
Interest in molecular evolution, non-model organisms, and integrative evolutionary analysis.
Supervision Received:
Receives general supervision from the Director of Phylogenomics Initiative, Grainger Bioinformatics Center
Supervision Exercised:
The position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Work Hours and Shift:
35 hours
Hybrid Eligibility:
Not eligible
Location:
1400 S. DuSable Lake Shore Dr. Chicago, IL 60605
Union Representation: This position is represented by Field Museum Workers United, AFSCME Council 31, AFL-CIO.
Pay Range: $61,461.58/Annually
