Under the supervision and direction of the Manager, Supervisor, Laboratory site or designee, Accurately and efficiently obtain venous or capillary blood specimens from patients for use in laboratory testing following Laboratory policies and procedures, transport the specimen to the laboratory, perform pre-analytic processing procedures, and complete all associated documentation both written and computerized. :DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Accurately follow physician orders when ordering the test(s) in the Laboratory computer system. Determine and implement the appropriate course of action when unsure of an order or specimen required prior to obtaining the sample. Accurately document all pertinent patient demographic and insurance information if performing the registration function. Independently obtain venous blood specimens from patients. Properly identify the patient according to policy each and every time. Perform the specimen collection in a manner appropriate for the population of the patient being served. Obtain appropriate and suitable specimens for the tests ordered. Receive specimens in the Laboratory computer system and distribute them in accordance with the urgency of the test requested. Prepare specimens according to the procedure for the test requested and store specimens at the appropriate storage temperature, if not immediately distributed. Competently perform EKG's on outpatients. Maintain competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served. Answer telephone according to Laboratory policy, take and relay messages accurately to the appropriate person. Assist callers with questions either answering their questions or directing them to the appropriate resource. FAX results in accordance with Laboratory and Hospital policy. Communicate information and instructions regarding tests and specimen collection to clients (e. g. patients and/or family members, physicians, other healthcare providers) in a manner appropriate to and respectful of the population of the client even under adverse conditions. Communicate to next shift significant events/information and/or pending testing. May be required to learn and maintain competency to perform phlebotomy including phlebotomy performance, population-appropriate patient education on post-phlebotomy care, and any documentation required. Maintain phlebotomy supplies in working area. Submit orders, as needed, according to standard Laboratory policy and procedure. Maintain phlebotomy trays in neat orderly manner Ensure drawing station, patient bathroom, and waiting area (as applicable) are neat and clean. Independently take appropriate corrective action, as needed. Ensure adequacy of supplies in patient bathroom (e. g. containers, towels, toilet paper, cleansing wipes, etc. ) replenishing stock as needed. Monitor equipment function and document information as required by Laboratory policy. Take corrective action as needed in consultation with the Supervisor and document it. Assist in training new phlebotomist or phlebotomy students on proper technique, policies, and procedures as directed by the PP&D Supervisor or designee. Attend and participate in department, hospital and committee meetings as appropriate. Participate in continuing education initiatives and seminars. Assist with local, state, federal, and regulatory agency compliance and preparedness activities. QUALIFICATIONS:MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED required MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 1 year of applicable experience in a laboratory setting including phlebotomy and EKG experience. Degree or credits in clinical laboratory science. LICENSES OR CERTIFICATION: Nationally recognized certification such as American Society for Clinical Laboratory Professionals (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Professional (NCA) equivalent preferred. OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED: Basic knowledge of Microsoft works, excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and computer skills. Must be organized and work to meet deadlines. Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager accepts, processes, identifies and labels specimens according to protocol. The Lab Assistant is familiar with the patient and specimen requirements, stores and transports specimens according to protocol and ensures specimen integrity is preserved at all times. They will operate automated instrumentation and assist in the upkeep that comes along with instrumentation. Coverage may include rotating weekends and holidays. Job Description:Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but are not limited to:General Laboratory1. Ensures proper labeling and identification of specimens and requisition forms. Brings discrepancies to the attention of the supervisor or senior staff. Records discrepancies and resolutions for quality monitoring. 2. Inventories and maintains adequate supplies in an organized fashion for various laboratories. Restocks workstations. 3. Monitors reagent and supplies and communicates need to the appropriate person to maintain adequate inventory and timely purchasing of necessary supplies. 4. Responsible for receiving, archiving, and discarding specimens according to established procedures. 5. Prepares benches and work stations for each day's specimen workload. Organizes and reloads instruments and supplies for each station appropriate to its service. 6. Properly prepares infectious biohazardous waste for transport in a manner that meets the requirements of Lahey Clinic Environmental Safety and Health Policy. 7. Helps to monitor laboratory equipment temperature and humidity readings. Maintains equipment temperature charts. Initiates corrective action and brings to the attention of team lead. 8. Organizes and files specimens in an established, organized specimen storage system. Assists Senior Staff in specimen retrieval to permit additional diagnostic testing. 9. Perform send out tasks, including packing lists, scanning requisitions and other administrative duties. 10. Assists with specimen receipt and specimen triage, ensuring proper quality monitoring methods are followed. Discrepancies are immediately brought to the attention of the supervisor or senior staff and properly documented. 11. Monitor Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAA) within the laboratory. Transport chemical waste in compliance with MWRA and hospital regulations. Transfer hazardous waste from work benches to SAA. 13. Assists staff as appropriate with routine and special projects. 14. Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control. 15. Train in Phlebotomy -drawing blood from patients and collecting and documenting specimens based on physician orders. This clinical staff position is the face of the lab and their effort starts the whole laboratory process, providing phlebotomy draws with attention to patient comfort and the physician orders. Location Specific- Anatomic Pathology Laboratory1. Collects, documents, and transports surgical pathology specimens from on campus clinical sites to the grossing rooms. 2. Assigns Cases to pathologists following the proper protocol. 3. Transports routine and special specimens within the hospital, maintaining diagnostic viability and specimen integrity for each case. 4. Daily exposure to formaldehyde and other hazardous chemicals and fixatives, all under controlled conditions. Minimal risk when proper protocols are observed and followed. Minimum Qualifications:Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Ability to identify and evaluate proper specimen collection and storage. Manual dexterity and acuity necessary to prepare specimens, screen specimens, prepare solutions, and operate instrumentation and a computer. Ability to concentrate for long periods of time, utilize good judgment, work accurately under pressure and handle stress to meet deadlines. Interpersonal verbal and written English language skills sufficient to exchange information with physicians and other colleagues. Work requires the ability to perform venipuncture techniques. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Experience: 1-year related laboratory experience preferred, but not required.
