Departmentalized technicians will have increased technical responsibility in areas of specialization.
Goal for evening grade 16 Technologists: technical expertise on all major instruments.

Responsible for maintaining inventory sheets in assigned areas.
Report needs to coordinators.
Responsible for reviewing Standard Operating Procedure Manuals periodically.
Write procedures for new tests and edit changes in old procedures as they are implemented.
Test and develop new procedures and products including appropriate statistical evaluation as requested.
Present reports of findings for evaluation by supervisor.
Train and evaluate students and new employees.
Operate computer including all patient data and maintenance and quality control routines.
Perform phlebotomies as requested.
Responsible for data entering own results into computer.
Maintain laboratory work areas in a clean and safe manner.
Attend laboratory meetings.
Attend and participate in in-service education meetings and educational seminars as requested.

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, independently performs a variety of clinical assays and the associated supporting work for use in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Performs start-up, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures on the instruments and laboratory equipment. Performs quality control and quality assurance procedures as required. Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but are not limited to:
Test Performance
1. Verify sample identification, acceptability of sample, and appropriateness of order according to written procedures.
2. Handle each specimen according to written procedure and perform follow-up procedures on rejected samples according to protocol.
3. Demonstrate ability to prioritize work by completing assignments according to written procedures without excessive waste within established turn around times.
4. Recognize and evaluate unusual or unreasonable results. Consult with manager or appropriate personnel about abnormal findings, unusual combinations or difficult analyses.
5. Record laboratory results (observations/interpretations/calculations) on worksheets, verify results are entered into the laboratory computer system correctly, and report STAT and critical values according to protocol.
6. Perform and document required QC/QA procedures according to established protocols. Interpret results to determine existing or potential out of control situations. Notify manager and/or QC coordinator.
7. Perform surveys by testing, recording, and reporting results accurately.
8. Perform scheduled maintenance and required documentation on instruments and equipment. Notify manager and/or PM coordinator of unresolved problems.
9. Assist as appropriate in teaching laboratory techniques to new colleagues and students.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Baccalaureate degree including laboratory internship at an institution certified by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Or Associates degree including laboratory internship at an institution certified by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) with a minimum of ten years full-time experience as a staff medical laboratory technician.
Licensure, Certification, Registration: Eligible for certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry or the National Certification Agency (NCA) for Medical Laboratory personnel. or by American Medical Technologists (AMT) for Medical Laboratory personnel. No licensure required.

POSITION FUNCTION:
Under the supervision and direction of the Manager, Supervisor, Laboratory site or designee, Accurately and efficiently obtain venous or capillary blood specimens from patients for use in laboratory testing following Laboratory policies and procedures, transport the specimen to the laboratory, perform pre-analytic processing procedures, and complete all associated documentation both written and computerized.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accurately follow physician orders when ordering the test(s) in the Laboratory computer system. Determine and implement the appropriate course of action when unsure of an order or specimen required prior to obtaining the sample. Accurately document all pertinent patient demographic and insurance information if performing the registration function.
Independently obtain venous blood specimens from patients. Properly identify the patient according to policy each and every time. Perform the specimen collection in a manner appropriate for the population of the patient being served. Obtain appropriate and suitable specimens for the tests ordered.
Receive specimens in the Laboratory computer system and distribute them in accordance with the urgency of the test requested. Prepare specimens according to the procedure for the test requested and store specimens at the appropriate storage temperature, if not immediately distributed.
Competently perform EKG's on outpatients.
Maintain competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.
Answer telephone according to Laboratory policy, take and relay messages accurately to the appropriate person. Assist callers with questions either answering their questions or directing them to the appropriate resource. FAX results in accordance with Laboratory and Hospital policy.
Communicate information and instructions regarding tests and specimen collection to clients (e.g. patients and/or family members, physicians, other healthcare providers) in a manner appropriate to and respectful of the population of the client even under adverse conditions.
Communicate to next shift significant events/information and/or pending testing.
May be required to learn and maintain competency to perform phlebotomy including phlebotomy performance, population-appropriate patient education on post-phlebotomy care, and any documentation required.

Able to load and unload and perform required maintenance on automated special staining equipment and other reagents used in the preparation of slides for special staining.
Able to perform maintenance on immunohistochemistry stainers and other reagents used in the preparation of slides for immunohistochemistry.
Understands and can initiate various slide staining methods used in Anatomic Pathology and Cytology Labs including but not limited to H&E, Pap Stain and Special Stains.
Has in depth knowledge of the tissue processing, ThinPrep processing, staining (including H&E, Pap and Special Stains) and cover-slipping equipment.
Participates in the validation and implementation of new specimen processing procedures, methods and equipment in conjunction with management and medical director directives.

Inventories and orders computer, clerical and phlebotomy supplies.
Logs and replaces supplies as appropriate.
Registers patients and specimens into the Hospital Computer system and orders laboratory testing.
Centrifuges, aliquots and labels specimens for referral testing and laboratory testing.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1.
Performs phlebotomy procedures, venipunctures, finger sticks, nares and nasopharyngeal swab collection as needed, and completes routine quality control maintenance in accordance with established departmental procedures.

Verifies, records, files, and organizes laboratory specimens, paperwork, and test results in accordance with established procedures.
Assists in maintaining paperwork for testing in the laboratory, making sure orders, face sheets and labels are available for the collectors.

Central Processing function including receiving specimens, centrifuging, labeling and aliquoting to appropriate tubes, organize specimens for appropriate areas, including sendout testing.

Investigates testing requirements, coordinates lab referrals, packages specimens for transport.
Enters send out test results accurately and in a timely manner.
Refers all abnormal send out test results to appropriate personnel.

Greets laboratory visitors and provides direction and/or assistance to patients, families, and visitors in a courteous and positive manner.
Answers incoming calls and responds to telephone requests with courtesy and accuracy.
Prints or fax reports to requested clients.
Schedules patients as needed.

Maintains a clean work environment and checks for daily temperature readings.
