Primary Function/General Purpose of Position
The Sterile Processing Technician Non-Certified, under general supervision, will inspect, clean, assemble, test, and processes patient care equipment, supplies, and instruments according to established policies and procedures and according to manufacturer's instructions for use. They will act in accordance to sterility per the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), The Joint Commission (JCAHO), Center for Disease Control (CDC), and state standards of practice. Primary duties may vary depending on area assigned.
Essential Job Functions
Performs decontamination functions including manual cleaning and processing of surgical instrumentation and patient care equipment according to manufacturer's instructions for use.
Applies proper knowledge of various detergents and chemical disinfectants for use in the decontamination and removal of blood, bone, and other body tissues from contaminated surgical equipment. Adheres to standard precautions while performing cleaning and sterilization duties.
Inventories, stocks, and delivers supplies, carts, equipment to all facility areas as indicated per facility guidelines. Orders, restocks, labels, and maintains proper inventory levels. Rotates stock, inspecting for outdates per market requirements.
Performs and documents quality control aspects of sterile processing using various information technology systems focusing on instrument tracking, surgery schedules, surgeon preference cards, supply ordering and management. Accurately maintains comprehensive quality assurance standards related to sterilization and infection control.
Operates and understands various sterilizers and sterilizing techniques required to produce sterile packages for use in the surgical setting keeping package assembly aseptic protocols in mind. Monitors sterilization regularly ensuring quality assurance through chemical and biological indicators and integrators.
Documents all activities as required within the outlined processes and reports variances that may affect the outcome of sterile products or patient care and safety.
Identifies and resolves infection control issues in and around transport of biological hazardous materials, including the use of universal precautions and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as sterile product identification.
Demonstrates knowledge of the operation and testing of washers and/or disinfectors, steam, and hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilizers, and other facility specific equipment and instrumentation.
Identifies surgical instrumentation by surgical specialty: General, Gynecological, Robotic, ENT, Orthopedics, Neurological, Vascular, Obstetrical, Urological, etcetera. Including functionality testing, assembly and disassembly as required according to manufacturer's instructions for use.
Accessible for "on call" as scheduled and is available within the time frames as indicated by the department.

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the reprocessing of reusable instruments and equipment in the Sterile Processing department of St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center. Responsibilities include the cleaning, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of reusables. Completes the OR case carts. Maintains appropriate Infection Control and JCAHO standards in work area. Works under the direction of the Lead Surgical Tech, Surgery Coordinator and Perioperative Nurse Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must possess CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certificate or obtain within one year of hire.
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma required.
EXPERIENCE:
Prior Central Service or Surgery experience preferred.

PRINCIPAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

e. Maintains accurate documentation of sterilization logs and bacteriological indicators. Assures
accurate productivity and quality record keeping.
f. Works closely with the operating room and other ancillary areas on tray set-ups.
g. Ensures that OR case gathering is performed in a accurate and timely basis.
h. Assures that patient care equipment is cleaned and set up appropriately.
3. Interpersonal Relations:
a. Communicates with Surgery in a courteous and efficient manner regarding stat case carts,
requests for additional instrumentation and problems.
b. Provides appropriate and timely follow-up to questions regarding the status of a particular
item.
c. Informs the manager of shortages in supplies used for processing instruments and equipment.
d. Works with manager to solve problems and improve work environment.
4. Must adhere to the hospital policy for maintaining confidentiality. Uses a PC to access surgery schedule and to generate surgical case cart pick list. Must maintain confidentiality of surgical patient information.

Job Summary:
The Sterile Processing Technician Certified, under general supervision, will inspect, clean, assemble, test, and processes patient care equipment, supplies, and instruments according to established policies and procedures and according to manufacturer's instructions for use. SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the reprocessing of reusable instruments and equipment in the Sterile Processing department of St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center. Responsibilities include the cleaning, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of reusables. Completes the OR case carts. Maintains appropriate Infection Control and JCAHO standards in work area. Works under the direction of the Lead Surgical Tech, Surgery Coordinator and Perioperative Nurse Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must possess CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certificate or obtain within one year of hire.
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma required.
EXPERIENCE:
Prior Central Service or Surgery experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Basic Level Skills

PRINCIPAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Assures the maintenance of adequate stock on hand.
a. Monitors inventory levels to maintain targeted turnover rates and customer fill-rates.
b. Coordinates with the inventory coordinator for replenishment of needed items.
c. Avoids excessive buildup of stock.
d. Maintains a neat, clean work environment through all processing areas; maintains neat and
accurate files.
e. Ensures requisitions are processed accurately and timely.
f. Ensures proper organization, location, rotation and identification of reusable supplies.
g. Assures that proper entries are made on stock issues, receipts, and returns to maintain an

2. Completes the sterile reprocessing of surgical instrumentation and linen packs.
a. Follows procedures and standards for preparing and handling sterile items.
b. Is able to demonstrates appropriate procedures to such as the use of sterilizers, setting up
surgical and/or treatment trays.
c. Ensures that aseptic techniques are employed in the preparation and handling of sterile
supplies. Adheres to departmental dress code, particularly in the decontamination area.
d. Assists with orientation and in-service training for all sterile supply personnel.
e. Maintains accurate documentation of sterilization logs and bacteriological indicators. Assures
accurate productivity and quality record keeping.
f. Works closely with the operating room and other ancillary areas on tray set-ups.
g. Ensures that OR case gathering is performed in a accurate and timely basis.
h. Assures that patient care equipment is cleaned and set up appropriately.
3. Interpersonal Relations:
a. Communicates with Surgery in a courteous and efficient manner regarding stat case carts,
requests for additional instrumentation and problems.
b. Provides appropriate and timely follow-up to questions regarding the status of a particular
item.
c. Informs the manager of shortages in supplies used for processing instruments and equipment.
d. Works with manager to solve problems and improve work environment.
4. Must adhere to the hospital policy for maintaining confidentiality. Uses a PC to access surgery schedule and to generate surgical case cart pick list. Must maintain confidentiality of surgical patient information.

Job Summary:
* The Sterile Processing Technician Certified, under general supervision, will inspect, clean, assemble, test, and processes patient care equipment, supplies, and instruments according to established policies and procedures and according to manufacturer's instructions for use. They will act in accordance with sterility per the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), The Joint Commission (JCAHO), Center for Disease Control (CDC), and state standards of practice. Primary duties may vary depending on area assigned.
* Performs decontamination functions including manual cleaning and processing of surgical instrumentation and patient care equipment according to manufacturer's instructions for use.
* Applies proper knowledge of various detergents and chemical disinfectants for use in the decontamination and removal of blood, bone, and other body tissues from contaminated surgical equipment. Adheres to standard precautions while performing cleaning and sterilization duties
* Inventories, stocks, and delivers supplies, carts, equipment to all facility areas as indicated per facility guidelines. Orders, restocks, labels, and maintains proper inventory levels. Rotates stock, inspecting for outdates per market requirements.
* Performs and documents quality control aspects of sterile processing using various information technology systems focusing on instrument tracking, surgery schedules, surgeon preference cards, supply ordering and management. Accurately maintains comprehensive quality assurance standards related to sterilization and infection control.
* Operates and understands various sterilizers and sterilizing techniques required to produce sterile packages for use in the surgical setting keeping package assembly aseptic protocols in mind. Monitors sterilization regularly ensuring quality assurance through chemical and biological indicators and integrators.
* Documents all activities as required within the outlined processes and reports variances that may affect the outcome of sterile products or patient care and safety.
* Identifies and resolves infection control issues in and around transport of biological hazardous materials, including the use of universal precautions and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as sterile product identification.
* Demonstrates knowledge of the operation and testing of washers and/or disinfectors, steam, and hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilizers, and other facility specific equipment and instrumentation.
* Identifies surgical instrumentation by surgical specialty: General, Gynecological, Robotic, ENT, Orthopedics, Neurological, Vascular, Obstetrical, Urological, etcetera. Including functionality testing, assembly and disassembly as required according to manufacturer's instructions for use.
* Participates in ongoing educational and competency verification opportunities.
* Participates in the orientation of new staff and students as assigned.
* Participates in the continuing development of personnel in the Operating Room.
* Accessible for "on call" as scheduled and is available within the time frames as indicated by the department.
Education/Certifications:
High School Diploma or GED (required)
Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) (required)

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
