California State University San Marcos company history timeline

1989

Bill W. Stacy was named the university's first president in June 1989, and over the next year recruited the first 12 members of the faculty.

In 1989, Governor George Deukmejian signed Senate Bill 365 (also sponsored by Craven) into law, officially creating Cal State San Marcos.

1990

23, 1990, ground was broken on the new campus, and construction began at the former chicken farm.

1991

In 1991, seven students were awarded the first Bachelor of Arts degrees in campus history.

1992

The first buildings were Craven Hall (opened December 1992), Academic Hall, Science Hall I, and the University Commons.

1993

The university continued to grow rapidly, and by 1993 CSUSM's enrollment had grown to almost 2,500 and it received accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

1995

Today, the campuses of the CSU include comprehensive and polytechnic universities and, since July 1995, the California State University Maritime Academy​, a specialized campus.

1995 - California State University, Monterey Bay, a redevelopment of former military base Fort Ord, admits its first students.

In 1995, CSUSM admitted its first freshman class and offered lower-division (and general education) courses for the first time, with enrollment growing to 3,600.

1998

In 1998, he also established the department of athletics, which debuted with six teams – men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s track and field.

2000

2000 - A second Student Trustee position is created.

2003

2003 - California State University Channel Islands begins accepting freshmen at the new campus.

Athletics welcomed an on-campus home in 2003 with the opening of the M. Gordon Clarke Field House, made possible by a pledge of $1.2 million from Helene Clarke in honor of her husband.

Following Gonzalez’s departure in 2003, the university welcomed the person who would become its longest-serving president, Karen S. Haynes.

2004

In 2004, Karen S. Haynes was named the university's third president, following Gonzalez's departure the year previously, and the university announced that it planned to establish a nursing school.

2005

2005 - California State University, Hayward is renamed California State University, East Bay.

2006

The School of Nursing opened in the fall of 2006.

2010

2010 - The California State University celebrates its 50th anniversary.

2013

2013 - The Cal State Concurrent Enrollment Program debuts.

2014

2014 - The CSU STEM VISTA Program launches to increase the number of students, especially from underrepresented communities, graduating with STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) degrees.

2014 - The California State University surpasses 3 million living alumni, marking the milestone with the “Class of 3 Million" celebration.

2018

2018 - For the first time in the CS​U's history, a majority of the campus presidents are female, with 12 of the 23 campuses being led by women.

The 12 women presidents of the CSU in 2018.​

2020

2020 - The CSU Center to Close the Opportunity Gap: Identifying Best Practices to Ensure Student Achievement in California's K-12 Schools opened at California State University, Long Beach to eliminate equity gaps at all levels of education.

CSUSM remains firmly committed to diversity and inclusion, receiving the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education, for the seventh straight year in 2020.

2022
