During the Festival there are three Stage Carpenter positions, one for each of the Pillow's primary venues: the Ted Shawn Theatre (TST), the Doris Duke Theatre (DDT), and the Henry J. Leir Stage (HJL). Candidates will be interviewed for all three and will be assigned to a venue when hired.
Built in 1942 as the first theater in America designed specifically for dance, the TST is a proscenium venue with motorized linesets that seats 620 patrons. The TST is programmed for 11 weeks of the season with an opening gala performance followed by productions by 1 company a week. The DDT is a modular wood box with flexible retractable seating, extensive catwalks, and robust technical infrastructure. The DDT is programmed for 7 weeks of the season with productions by 1 company a week. The typical TST and DDT performance schedule is 6 shows from Wednesday through Sunday. The HJL is an outdoor uncovered amphitheater style space that is programmed for 9 weeks of the season with most companies' engagement being one performance. The typical HJL performance schedule is 3 shows Thursday through Saturday.
Stage Carpenters are a member of either the TST, DDT, or HJL production teams and report to that theater's Production Manager. During the pre-season the Stage Carpenters assist the Stage Operations Supervisor with the preparation and installation of stage operations equipment including but not limited to rigging, flooring, staging, seating, and soft goods. During the Festival they work closely and collaboratively with the Production Managers and the staff of visiting companies as a member of the run crew for load-in, rehearsals, and performances. They also assist the Production Managers and the Stage Operations Supervisor with the organization and maintenance of their venue's stage operations infrastructure, storage areas, and equipment. While the Stage Carpenter's primary focus will be supporting the stage operations elements of productions in their assigned theater they will assist other production departments and other venues as needed and assigned by the Production Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Participate in the creation of an accessible and collaborative work environment that enables artists and technicians to create together positively and safely.
Join advancing and show specific production meetings as needed.
Assist in the installation of stage operations equipment into all performance spaces, studios, exhibition spaces and temporary tents.
Actively participate in load-ins, load-outs, work calls, focuses, notes sessions, staging and technical rehearsals, performances, and changeovers.
Alongside the Assistant Production Managers in planning and facilitating scene changes, fly moves, prop hand-offs, and floor swaps.
Assist the Assistant Production Managers in the creation and maintenance of backstage paperwork and signage.
Ensure that the stage floor is prepared and safe by taking the lead in performing daily and show-specific cleaning and maintenance.
Remain in communication with production management and the Stage Operations Supervisor and alert them to any unexpected show-specific requirements or equipment or system safety concerns.
Maintain clean and orderly stage, backstage, and storage areas.
Assist the Stage Operations Supervisor in maintaining and improving the Pillow's facilities, equipment, and systems.
Assist in the creation and installation of decor or scenery for events or other activities.
Provide support to the Video Documentation Team in recording programming.
Support the installation of work and equipment into exhibition spaces.
Support the activation of weather plans for HJL and other outdoor programming.
Attend all organizational, departmental and production meetings including a weekly All-Staff Meeting.
Under the general direction of the DoTP, assist with coordination of emergency response for staff and patrons in the event of an emergency or extreme weather.
Complete Adult/Child CPR, First Aid, and Cultural Competence Training (provided to all seasonal staff during the pre-season)
Assist and support other departments, including non-production departments, as needed and assigned.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
2+ years of stage carpentry, carpentry, and/or stagehand experience.
Knowledge of and experience with theatrical stage operations systems, equipment and standard operating procedures.

The Opportunity
In this role, you will work directly under the supervision of a qualified Lead Carpenter and construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, metal studs, and drywall using carpenter's hand tools and power tools, while conforming to local building codes.
Responsibilities
Help install foundations, walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs using materials such as wood, steel, metal, concrete, plastics, and composites of multiple materials
Assist with fitting and installing window frames, doors, door frames, door hardware, interior and exterior trim using a carpenters level, plumb bob, and laser levels
Erect scaffolding, and ladders for assembling structures above ground levels.
Position and hold timbers, lumber, or paneling in place for fastening or cutting
Select tools, equipment, and/or materials from storage and transport items to the work site
Clean work areas, machines, or equipment, to maintain a clean and safe job site
Hold plumb bobs, sighting rods, or other equipment to aid in establishing reference points and lines
Cut and install timbers, lumber, and/or paneling to specified dimensions, and drill holes in timbers or lumber
Sand surfaces to remove ridges, tool marks, glue, or caulking
Qualifications
Minimum of 3 years of carpentry experience
Eagerness and willingness to learn
Strong working knowledge of job site safety as well as the ability to complete a company-specific safety orientation
Be able to work harmoniously as part of a team.
High standard of integrity and professionalism

Requirements:
Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Experience: Five (5) years fixture installation and retail or commercial finish carpentry experience. One (1) year minimum supervisory experience.
Certification(s): OSHA10 or 30, Forklift, aerial lift (Company will provide if necessary).
Technology: Able to download and use APPS on phone and mobile devices. Able to make electronic submissions though company portal.
Physical Demands: Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time, climb ladders, work from an aerial lift. Frequent bending, kneeling, twisting and squatting. Work with materials over your head for short durations. Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. regularly.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Must be able to pass a Drug Screening, Criminal Background Check and MVR screening for approved driving status.
Must be able to complete a Company Sponsored CPR/First Aid Training course online.
Available to work overtime as needed. Our typical workweek is 40 to 60 hours.
Be flexible to work non-conventional shifts when required (some overnight projects may occur).
Able to travel and be away from home for durations from 2-8 weeks depending on our contract.
Must provide own basic hand tools and cordless drill.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
· Able to complete onsite millwork, cabinet and countertop, fixture, graphic and décor installs in commercial and retail environments.
· Personnel management of various crew sizes ranging from 3-6 employees or larger projects of 8 or more employees.
· Able to receive, stage and manage large inventory of millwork and fixture parts for distribution and installation.
· Able to evaluate site conditions, construction and delivery schedules and when these factors are not aligned, clearly and effectively communicate to Project Management Team, onsite contractor or when necessary, our client.
· Able to establish and understand layouts for millwork, fixtures and other elements.
· Must always represent the company in a professional manner. Adopt and embrace our company Core Values.
· Report time sheets, expense reports, daily reports and progress photos electronically. Generate additional work validations as required when non-contract scope is required.
· Perform all tasks of a finish carpenter including installation of cabinets, countertops, standing and running trim (base, chair rail, crown moldings, door and window casings), scribing, coping, installing wall panel systems, retail fixtures etc.
· Ability to manage and motivate others while maintaining professionalism.
· Able to professionally interact with clients, general contractors and other sub-contractors.
· Strong working knowledge of woodworking hand and power tools.
· Strong working knowledge and understanding of architectural drawings, shop drawings and fixturing floorplans.
· Must have a strong commitment to job site safety including always maintaining a clean jobsite.
