Journeyman Carpenters at MatPel Builders are highly skilled team members with deep building knowledge and craftsmanship. They have completed a minimum of four years of hands-on experience and training, demonstrating the ability to independently interpret plans, specifications, and execute tasks with precision and efficiency. Journeyman Carpenters report directly to the Foreman and/or Superintendent and work closely with site leadership to ensure that all work meets the highest standards of quality and adheres to both design intent and structural requirements. They serve as role models on the jobsite, setting the tone for professionalism, productivity, and collaboration. This role is often paired with an Apprentice Carpenter to promote efficiency and support ongoing development of junior team members. Proficiency at the Journeyman level qualifies a team member for progression to the Foreman role. Main Responsibilities Fundamentals of Construction Have thorough knowledge of building codes. Understand related general trade work. Complete daily/weekly timecards accurately. Have geometry and math skills for calculating volume, angles, etc. Complex Plan Reading Interpret plans. Identify electrical, mechanical, and other details. Identify potential problems and ask pertinent questions. Layout complete buildings, including ceilings, floors, walls, and related trades. Building Skills Have thorough concrete/form work skills. Have plumbing/leveling skills to frame walls and for specialty framing. Have thorough trim work skills: interior, exterior, built-ins, including unorthodox and unique details. Install, repair, and replace all types of doors, windows, cabinets, and appliances. Install, repair, and adjust all door, window, and cabinet hardware. Have knowledge of roof framing, stair and soffit framing and deck building. Have knowledge of proper flashing details and waterproof membrane installation. Safety Understand and comply with OSHA standards for job site safety. Model safety behavior and practices always. Wear safety clothing, gloves, eye and hearing protection, dust masks and other appropriate safety devices. Use all power tools in a safe manner. Maintain personal tools in safe working order. Required Experience, Traits & Skills High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent. A 3-4year carpentry apprenticeship plus a minimum of 4 years' experience in residential construction OR 7+ years' experience in residential construction. Must own hand tools common to the trade.
