Job Summary: This position is for an open heart team member, so open heart experience is preferred. Busy Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular (CTV) programs. The CVOR CSFA works as a First Assist to Cardiovascular Surgeons. Some common procedures that the CSFA will first assist on are coronary artery bypass, aortic valve replacement and mitral valve surgery. 250 open heart cases a year. The CSFA will autonomously harvest vein for CVOR and vascular cases. Other job duties include assisting with all CTV cases. The CSFA plays a hands-on role in surgical procedures by controlling bleeding, suturing incisions and wounds, and intervening if complications arise.
The Operating Room has up to 12 anesthesia provided rooms, including 2 Open Heart rooms and 1 Urology room equipped with fluoroscopy. Minimum Requirements:
One to two years of CVOR experience is required.
Mainly focused on CVOR, Vascular, and Thoracic services.
Robotic experience would be a plus.
Knowledge of current trends and techniques in nursing.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) possesses and demonstrates competencies related to all aspects of perioperative care, including preoperative review of patient history and physical, preoperative tests results, and postoperative transfer of care and monitoring for complications. The CSFA serves as the first assistant in surgical procedures under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon/physician; handles all variety of tissue appropriately to reduce the potential for injury or compromised blood supply; uses surgical instruments properly, and employs principles of safe tissue handling:
Maintains current knowledge of procedures performed
Demonstrates advanced knowledge of normal and pathological anatomy and physiology
Safely positions patients for the surgical procedure
Performs surgical prepping and draping of patients for the surgical procedure
Assists surgeon in identifying patient and staff safety hazards
Provides exposure to the operative site
Manipulates equipment and instruments to enhance the visual field
Suctions and sponges to maintain a dry surgical field resulting in an optimal visualization of the surgical field
Provides counter-traction of tissue utilizing various instruments
Assists with maintaining hemostasis by clamping/ligating vessels, using electrocautery to tissue, applying manual direct pressure, assisting with use of pharmaceutical agents (e.g. topical thrombin) and other means as directed by the surgeon/physician
Utilizes appropriate suturing techniques of tissues/tissue planes with appropriate suture materials
Assists and independently close wound, approximate skin edges when utilizing skin staplers
Assists and independently applies dressing, splint, cast or immobilizer at the end of the surgical procedure using proper aseptic/sterile techniques
Demonstrates ability to administer local anesthetic
The Certified Surgical First Assistant will perform in a CST role when not needed as a first assistant
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• CSFA must have sound clinical knowledge of technology and treatment applications; must also possess skills to educate/train staff and complies with AORN education standards for the CSFA; and a demonstrated knowledge of the surgeries in which the CSFA participates. * The CSFA may share a single surgical site with the surgeon being assisted and may not independently perform a procedure on an opposite site except subcutaneous tissue and skin closure.
* Placing a screw or manipulating a tool when manipulation and positioning of hardware must be held in such a specific position that the maneuver can only be accomplished by the orthopedic surgeon. All prosthetic placements, use of tools (drills, saws, etc.) and measurement to determine prosthetic size is performed by the orthopedic surgeon.
* The CSFA may prepare a tendon for grafting with the surgeon harvesting the tendon for grafting.

High school graduate or GED. Completion of ST program in an accredited school approved by NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting). Completion of First Assisting Program from school accredited by CAAHEP (Commission Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program).
Greater Charlotte:
Graduation from and accredited surgical assistance program required. Acquires continuing education annually to maintain current competence and credentials as required.
Navicent:
Graduation from and accredited surgical assistance program required. Acquires continuing education annually to maintain current competence and credentials as required.
Certification / License

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
* may be exposed to body fluids, waste and chemicals, anesthesia gases, hazardous materials, radiation, and life-threatening diseases • this position will need to recognize the needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated, i.e., understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs of normal aging; prior experience with various age groups is preferred • ability to stand for long periods of time • ability to lift 50 pounds • ability to cooperate and work well with others • ability to communicate with mask on and not facing others • ability to work in a stressful, changing environment • ability to respond quickly to emergencies. • ability to respond to fire and other codes (e.g. evacuate patients) • ability to work designated shifts including weekends and holidays • ability to assume on-call responsibility
