Maintains order and security in the jail and ensures the safety and well-being of inmates, employees, and visitors within the guidelines of applicable state and federal laws, departmental directives, and rules and regulations. Reports to the Sergeant or other designated person and works with co-workers, inmates, attorneys, visitors, ministers, social workers, and probation, parole, court, police, and other agency personnel to provide operational support.
Key Responsibilities and Performance Standards
* Monitors inmate activity, and records/maintains in log book.
* Works control panel for cells, entrance to cell block, emergency exits, and visitation/attorney area.
* Conducts security inspections.
* Oversees inmate recreation activities.
* Assists in the distribution and collection of commissary items, inmate clothing, and linen.
* Performs emergency first aid to inmates as necessary.
* Answers telephone and operates intercom system.
POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:
* Patrolling assigned zone to detect and deter criminal activity.
* Establish departmental rapport, respect and trust with the residents and the employees of the areas patrolled.
Education: High School diploma, trade school, or G.E.D.
Experience: No experience required. Selected candidate will be trained to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.
Preferred Experience: Previous experience in law enforcement, public safety or another related occupation.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
* Considerable knowledge of law enforcement and the corrections process.
* Familiarity with applicable state and federal laws, county policies and procedures, and departmental directives.
* Proficiency in using GCIC/NCIC and JMS computer operations, physical restraint methods and equipment, first aid, CPR, and interpersonal communications.
* Good communication skills, both oral and written.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Skills:
* Possess or have ability to meet current requirements set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act/Peace Officer's Standards and Training Act.
* Possess or have ability to obtain a valid state operator/driver's license for the type vehicle or equipment operated.
* Possess or have the ability to meet the standards of training to be Certified in the carrying and deployment of the Taser.
Certification: Georgia Post Mandate Jailer Certification

How You Will Make an Impact
Perform inmate head counts, cell checks, and searches. Monitor, log, and supervise inmate movement, recreation, visitations, cleaning, laundry, and security checks. Receive and release inmates by completing paperwork, fingerprinting, photographing, data entry, and conducting checks for outstanding warrants, protection orders, etc. Log and manage inmate property, money, and supplies. Exercise appropriate use of force and self-defense tactics to restrain disorderly inmates and deescalate volatile situations. Operate and maintain radios, telephones, and other communication equipment. Operate doors and intercoms and perform security checks of the perimeter, buildings, and grounds. What You Need to Succeed in this Role
High school diploma or GED and one year of relevant work experience. Comparable combination of education and work experience may be considered. Must pass a written examination. Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a safe driving record with Minnehaha County. Must successfully complete pre-employment background process. Purpose of Job
The primary purpose of this job is to maintain order and supervise offenders in the Athens-Clarke County Correctional Institution, Food Service Center, or Diversion Center. Job Related Requirements
WORK SCHEDULE: Depending on need, shifts up to 12 hours, rotating days off from 6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. Additional task-related shifts may be 6 to 8 hours.
May be required to work on religious holidays.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Emergency Position
