City of Durant company history timeline

1858

Before the Civil War, this was known as the “dark corner of the county.” Cotton plantations predominated with numerous black slaves. It was founded in 1858 as a station on the Mississippi Central Railroad, later part of the Illinois Central.

1872

Occupation of the townsite began in November 1872 when a wheelless boxcar was placed on the east side of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway tracks.

1873

In 1873 Dixon Durant erected the town's first building, a wooden store, on the east side of the boxcar.

1907

Durant, city, seat (1907) of Bryan county, southern Oklahoma, United States, located in the Red River valley a few miles north of the Texas border.

1944

Generally, the only natural lakes in Oklahoma are oxbow lakes and playas, which usually evaporate for at least a portion of the year. It is impounded by a dam (completed 1944) on the Red River near Denison, Texas.

1975

In 1975 Chief David Gardner located the headquarters of the Choctaw Nation in the former Oklahoma Presbyterian College buildings.
