Westminster Police company history timeline

1824

The National Gallery was founded in 1824.

1833

Wellington Barracks were built in 1833.

1834

In 1834 Westminster Palace was destroyed by fire (although Westminster Hall survived). The Houses of Parliament were built to replace it.

1840

Trafalgar Square was laid out in 1840.

1856

The National Portrait Gallery was founded in 1856.

1868

The bronze lions were made by Edwin Landseer in 1868.

1874

Gladstone from office in the early part of the year 1874.

However, even with growing interest in the region, the population of Westminster was only 225 people by 1874.

1882

Northeast of Somerset House (home of the Courtauld Institute Galleries and the Gilbert Collection [decorative arts]) is the eastern terminus of the Strand, as well as the voluminous Royal Courts of Justice, which replaced Westminster Hall as the chief law court of England in 1882.

1893

The National Gallery has a superb collection of Old Masters paintings, and Tate Britain (a branch of the national Tate galleries), built in 1893–97 on the Thames near Vauxhall Bridge, has large holdings of British paintings and sculpture.

1904

During the 1904–05 season, City of Westminster joined the London League, finishing bottom of the First Division in their only season in the league.

1911

Methodist Central Hall was built in 1911.

1930

Whitehall Theatre was built in 1930.

1957

The proposal to incorporate Westminster and Barber City was approved by a vote of 1,096 to 1,008, and Westminster became California’s 337th city in 1957.

1984

Other attractions are the Cabinet War Rooms, which opened in 1984, and the Guards Museum.
