Psychology is an exciting and changing field that has an impact on your life. Although a little more than a century old as a formal discipline, the study of psychology has revolutionized how we look at others and ourselves. While psychologists are involved in a broad range of specialties, they share the common goal of attempting to understand behavior. Hopefully, throughout this course you will find that many of the topics covered have relevance to your own life. You may find that you look at some situations differently, that you have some new insights into human behaviors, including your own.
In combining the study of psychology with the study and practice of mindfulness-the “awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally”-as outlined by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D (and to which he often adds “in the service of self-understanding and wisdom”), this course offers a rich opportunity to put into practice aspects of positive psychology, the science of well-being and strengths and a rapidly growing branch of psychology in 2021 (“Jon Kabat-Zinn: Defining Mindfulness” 2017).
