United Methodist Church company history timeline

1990

In 1990, Church of the Resurrection started as a small church with a goal to welcome thinking people not actively involved in a church.

1992

By 1992, attendance grew and the church began meeting at Leawood Elementary School.

1994

They moved into their first permanent sanctuary in the fall of 1994, which is now the Wesley Covenant Chapel.

1996

The stately granite church, Baldwin Memorial United Methodist, celebrated its 100th year in 1996.

In 1996, a History Room was established in the Educational Building.

1998

As growth continued, the church constructed a larger sanctuary in 1998 that currently serves as the student center.

2002

In 2002, the congregation that had its beginning in 1777 as a “Methodist Society” was 225 years old.

2004

The continued growth made way for a 3,050-seat sanctuary, an educational wing and prayer chapel in 2004.

2008

Live web streaming of worship services began in late 2008 for those unable to worship at a physical location.

2011

By 2011, Church of the Resurrection was noted as one of the ‘Top Churches to Watch in America’ and held 24 Candlelight Christmas Eve worship services between its four campuses, with 27,936 people in attendance.

2017

In 2017, the church opened a new sanctuary which seats 3,500 and includes a large stained glass window called The Resurrection Window.

2018

In 2018 the church’s global membership exceeded 12.5 million people.

2020

In 2019, at a special session of the General Conference, leaders voted to affirm the traditional stance against homosexuality, and a proposal to allow individual churches autonomy in decisions regarding gay clergy and same-sex marriage was voted down. As a result of the significant division within the denomination following this vote, in early 2020 church leaders proposed splitting the church to resolve the debate.
