The custodian plays an essential role in maintaining the buildings of the UW Tacoma Campus, and supporting a learning environment that promotes health, safety, and integrity. This position provides regular building maintenance function by performing custodial tasks to maintain cleanliness and care of facilities for the entire campus, including restrooms, classrooms, laboratories, student gathering spaces, auditoriums, offices and conference rooms. The custodian position also serves as a role model for students by displaying a professional, courteous, and helpful nature.
This hourly, intermittent position is considered essential and will be expected to continue to report to work if the University suspends operations. The position will have varied hours between 1st shift (3:30 am to 12:00 pm), Day shift (7:30 am to 4:00 pm) and 2nd shift (12:00 pm to 8:30 pm) and include event cleaning.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Typical duties include
Clean and sanitize restrooms/shower rooms and fixtures in accordance with UWT campus procedures and standards; refill restroom dispensers. Applies cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures, adheres to safety measures for cleaning.
Clean whiteboards and chalkboards, replacing classroom supplies as needed; dust and wipe furniture; sweep, mop or vacuum floors, reset space furnishings; empty receptacles for trash, recycle, and compostable materials, pick up litter within the campus and on campus grounds. Make certain all areas of the building are kept in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition according to industry and/or University standards.
Strip, clean, buff and apply finish to floors; use floor buffers/polishers; vacuum and deep clean carpets with extraction equipment.
Use and maintain assigned equipment and hand tools such as vacuum, broom, mop, squeegee, ladder for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, and furniture. Adheres to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment.
Lock and unlock interior spaces; secure building when facilities are not in use by checking for unlocked doors and windows and reporting any issues to lead/supervisor as well as Campus Safety and Security; report unauthorized occupants.
Follow written and/or verbal instructions regarding the use of chemicals, supplies and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures.
Report needs for repair and/or maintenance.
May wash interior or reasonably accessible exterior windows.
May perform cleaning and related activities in areas within a reasonable distance from buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment to remove snow or debris, or sweeping sidewalks or stairs.
May move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis.
May operate high-pressure washer.
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Physical ability to do required work.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to be physically active for the entire shift while completing cleaning tasks, including regularly lifting up to 35 lbs.
Employee is required to properly use such safety equipment as is appropriate to the work to prevent injury to self or others.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
* Performs cleaning in all areas of a building.
* Performs cleaning of all floor areas such as vacuuming, shampooing, sweeping, mopping, stripping, scrubbing, waxing, and buffing.
* Cleans and polishes all bathroom fixtures.
* Cleans and washes all glass surfaces, ceilings and walls.
* The use of a ladder up to 12 feet in height may be required.
* Replaces light bulbs and cleans light fixtures, using a ladder as required.
* Refills holder of disposable items, such as soap, bathroom tissue, paper towels, etc. Cleans and disinfects exercise equipment and other areas.
* Reports breakage and needed repairs.
* Moves furniture, supplies and miscellaneous equipment; orders and delivers supplies to various areas.
* Collects trash from receptacles throughout the building and empties it into various areas.
* Performs duties in the immediate exterior of building such as sweeping sidewalks, snow and ice removal at entrances, cleaning debris from grounds and window wells, and cleaning exterior windows.
* Locks and unlocks doors as required.
* Assists in unloading trucks, unpacking, assembling, and moving equipment and furniture.
* Picks up and returns equipment for repair by maintenance.
* Delivers supplies to designated areas.
* Operates high pressure, water-cleaning apparatus to clean and disinfect rug runners, floors, walls, and showers.
* Maintains inventory of custodial supplies, and keeps and prepares other records and reports as directed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Knowledge of standard cleaning techniques and characteristics of surfaces to be cleaned, and equipment and supplies required.
* Ability to move furniture and objects in preparation for cleaning; to load and unload trash receptacles; to operate safely and properly care for power machinery; to use arm muscles in hand cleaning, mopping, and scrubbing for protracted periods of time; to work on ladders.
* Knowledge of proper bending and lifting techniques and ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
* Ability to work in a variety of environments including crowded public areas and high and low temperature areas.
* Knowledge of the safe use if chemical cleaning agents and possible hazards relating to environmental sanitation.
* Ability to communicate effectively with others.

Public, Student and Teacher Relations
Employees will be asked to wear a simple uniform and/or name tag while on duty, which will identify them as “Facilities Worker”. Appearance is required to be well kept and clean.
Good public relations are a MUST! Common courtesy, diplomacy and common sense are expected.
Custodial staff may, if necessary, ask students to leave the building if they are causing problems. Report all such problems to the supervisor and principal.
In all cases dealing with students, custodial staffs are expected to use mature judgment.
People should not be allowed in the building unsupervised.
A teacher's request for a custodial worker to do specific work should be referred to the supervisor, unless no serious interruption of work schedule will occur
Minimum Qualifications:
Physical ability to lift 75 lbs. occasionally and 50 lbs. often.
Experience in custodial duties/general maintenance.
High school Diploma or equivalent.
