Position Summary A Public Works Laborer is responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance work associated with the waste management, street and facility maintenance duties of the Public Works Department. Employees are required to perform heavy physical labor in outdoor weather conditions, using a variety of tools and equipment. This position will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of the City's commercial areas, including public streets, parks, and other public spaces, and or projects as assigned. The position requires physical labor performed outdoors in all weather conditions, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The work schedule is Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10:00am to 6:00pm. Duties and Responsibilities Clean and maintain commercial streets, sidewalks, and public parks within the city. Collect litter, debris, and refuse from designated comercial areas. Perform duties for the municipal residentail waste collection operations as assigned. Engage in a variety of grounds maintenance work such as pruning, watering and mulching; operate hand and power tools to cut grass and remove weeds. Perform various street maintenance duties including asphalt and concrete repairs, storm drain maintenance, sign installation and maintenance, street marking, litter removal, salt spreading, snow and ice removal and other required maintenance to streets and roads. Assist in the maintenance and repair of buildings and facilities; perform general custodial duties and activity set-up as required; provide contractors with access to City buildings and secure buildings after services are provided Load and unload heavy materials from trucks; aid in moving boxes and equipment. Operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner; and perform related duties and responsibilities, as required. Observe and maintain established safety policies and procedures and take appropriate safety precautions during the course of performing daily tasks. Communicate effectively with the public and represent the City of Mount Rainier. Available on-call for snow removal, critical maintenance and emergency situations Direct traffic when necessary to ensure safety of pedestrians, motorists and work crew. Perform manual labor activities as needed and/or required by the Public Works Department.
